Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Alan Artleby! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jimmy Mendy! The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Donatello Bradman and Topper Green.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mendy misses with a double jab
and Artleby counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Artleby. Artleby trying to control the position from guard on top but Mendy is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Artleby is really struggling to control Mendy but he's trying to hold on to the position. Mendy trying to keep a closed guard but Artleby is proving a slippery customer.
Artleby trying to control but Mendy is working from the bottom. Mendy avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Artleby works over Mendy with some ground and pound from guard. Artleby trying to control but Mendy is working from the bottom. Mendy had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Artleby defends it easily. Mendy wants to sweep but no luck.
That's one minute gone in the round. Artleby engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Artleby is in close to Mendy's body, working some short punches and elbows. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Mendy can do anything to dispel that myth. Mendy is controlling Artleby's posture. Artleby advances to half guard. Mendy avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Artleby. Artleby is thwarting Mendy's attempts to control the position. Mendy is staying active underneath Artleby, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Mendy is holding on to half guard well. Artleby slips a nice elbow through Mendy's hands, connecting with Mendy's forehead.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Artleby working the head and body with strikes. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Artleby looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Mendy with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Artleby passes the guard and advances to mount! Mendy in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head. Mendy told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet. Mendy wants to get back to his feet.
Artleby has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Mendy's face.
Mendy takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position. Artleby prevents Mendy from getting the reversal. Artleby tries to control but Mendy wriggling away.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Artleby controlling his opponent. Artleby landing punches. Artleby lands a couple of good shots and Mendy has given up his back, trying to escape the position! Mendy controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Artleby lands a shot to the head. Artleby has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Artleby is working the ground and pound here and the referee is taking a close look at Mendy. He must escape soon or this one will be stopped. Artleby lands strikes to the head.
Mendy is rocked! The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Artleby cracks Mendy with a big right hand from the back mount! Mendy immediately covers up and the referee dives in to save him under a barrage of more strikes! Artleby takes this one by TKO!
