PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Taken Yew Down (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nik Reeder (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Taken Yew Down!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Nik Reeder!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Elvis Blanc and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Reeder bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Reeder throws a right and a left that Down avoids nicely.
Down throws a head kick but Reeder moves out of range.
The fighters circle momentarily. Down darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Reeder shoots for a takedown but Down saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Down lunges at Reeder with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Reeder's hand.
Down throws a right and a left that both miss.
Reeder displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Down throws out the jab.
Reeder looks to score with a jab to the body but Down is just out of range.
Down feints a jab promting Reeder to slip. Down then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Reeder slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Reeder moves in looking to clinch but Down pushes him off.
A combination from Down does no damage.
Down getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Reeder tries to score a power double leg takedown but Down sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Reeder somewhat.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Down pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Reeder throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Down tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Reeder is in Down's guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Reeder prevents Down from getting back to his feet.

Reeder gets to his feet. Down looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Down throws a sloppy head kick and Reeder moves out of range easily.
Down looks to land a combination but Reeder avoids it well.
Reeder shoots in looking for a takedown. Down tries to sprawl out of it but Reeder keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Down manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Taken Yew Down has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nik Reeder.
Reeder staying out of range there.

Reeder fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Down, pushing him back against the cage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Down manages to break the clinch.
Reeder tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Down counters with a low kick, right behind Reeder 's knee.
Down misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Down.
Down is breathing heavily.
Reeder defending well as Down loads up on a big left hand.
Reeder rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Down moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

and Down counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Down throws a series of punches but Reeder moves out of range.
Down tries to bum rush Reeder with a series of wild strikes but Reeder uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Reeder tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Down counters with a flying knee. Nice.

Reeder moves into range and clinches up with Down.
Reeder tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Down's elbow.
Down is trying to push Reeder away but Reeder has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Down is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Reeder is trying to break the clinch but Down has him pressed against the cage.
Down prevents a takedown attempt there.

Down escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Reeder closes the distance and clinches.
Reeder drops down looking for an ankle pick but Down pulls his leg out and moves away.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Reeder tries a head kick but it misses.
Down lands a jab to the head.
Down looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Taken Yew Down is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Reeder misses with a takedown attempt - Down sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Down throws a series of punches but Reeder avoids them all with ease.
Reeder wants to clinch but Down slips to the side
and Down counters with a series of strikes. Reeder will be more careful next time no doubt.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Reeder moves into the clinch successfully.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Reeder has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Down uses from the top position.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Taken Yew Down dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Down throws a right and a left that Reeder avoids nicely.

Reeder closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Down quickly recovers to half guard.
Down wants to get back to full guard.
Down is in trouble now - Reeder has advanced to mount!
Down's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Reeder trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Down wants to control but Reeder is having none of it.
Reeder thowing shots but they're missing.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Down is working to get back to half guard.
Reeder wants to control the pace but Down is squirming around nicely.
Down is looking to get to half guard.
Reeder looking to control but Down is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
You get the feeling that Down really doesn't like being in this position too much.

Reeder working for a submission but Down is keeping him at bay.

Reeder swings around for an armbar and he's got it! Wow, that came out of nowhere! What a finish!
