Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rikiya Sonoda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Russell Patterson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Patterson is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by "Still Unbroken" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The key to victory for Rikiya Sonoda has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of

1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Russell Patterson! The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Wesley Smith and George Francis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sonoda throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Sonoda feints and then cracks Patterson's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Patterson down. Nice sprawl there from Sonoda as Patterson shoots in. Sonoda listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut. Sonoda tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Sonoda pushes Patterson away with a front kick. Sonoda lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
It looks like Russell Patterson has been cut. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. A punch combination from Sonoda misses. Patterson moves into range and clinches up with Sonoda. Sonoda misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Patterson.

Sonoda definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Sonoda tries to land a knee to the head but Patterson blocks with his arms.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Patterson has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Knees in the clinch landing for Sonoda.

Rikiya Sonoda has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Russell Patterson. Patterson can't get the takedown.
Patterson takes a knee to the side of the body. Patterson managing to block the knees to the body from Sonoda.
Sonoda has the Thai clinch. He lands a big knee to the head and Patterson goes down! Sonoda dives on top of him - Patterson manages to get guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Sonoda postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Sonoda trying to control but Patterson is working from the bottom. Sonoda trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Sonoda is in close to Patterson's body, working some short punches and elbows. Sonoda throwing strikes from guard but Patterson blocks nicely. Sonoda makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sonoda gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent. Sonoda clinches up against the cage. Sonoda connects with a knee to the head.
Sonoda tries to land knees in the clinch but Patterson avoids the damage to the body. Sonoda lands a big knee to the head and Patterson goes down! Sonoda pounces and finishes the fight with strikes! He jumps to his feet and celebrates with the crowd!
