Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ron Wood! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Franklin Winter! The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Alec Ball and Steve Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Wood rushes Winter and presses him up against the cage. Wood is fighting off a takedown attempt but Winter is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Wood to the mat. Wood regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Winter sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Wood's guard. Wood avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Winter. Winter has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Wood trying to control here.
Wood is looking to improve his position.
Wood is trying to control but can't.
Wood might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Winter trying to mount his opponent but Wood defends it. Wood is refusing to be controlled, as Winter sits in half guard. Wood desperately trying to maintain half guard.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Ron Wood. Wood misses with a wild combination.
That's one minute gone in the round. Winter dodges the punch combination from Wood.
Wood wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection. Wood shoots in for a takedown but Winter shows good takedown defense. Wood shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Winter as he avoids it easily. Wood throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Winter. Wood shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Winter defends it nicely. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ron Wood. That's going to take a lot out of him. A combination from Wood does no damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Wood has taken the fight to the clinch.
Wood breaks the clinch.
Wood closes the distance and lands a one-two. Wood stalks Winter and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Winter's face. Winter staggers backwards, shaken. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Wood swinging wildly here.
Wood tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Wood looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio. Wood tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Winter decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Wood's guard. Winter drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Winter jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Wood working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Winter. Wood keeping moving, preventing Winter from controlling successfully. Winter throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Wood works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Wood had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Winter defends it easily. Winter drops back looking for a leg! Wood is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Wood manages to kick Winter off! Winter jumps back into Wood's guard. Wood keeping moving, preventing Winter from controlling successfully. Winter seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Wood controls Winter momentarily but Winter frees himself. Winter drops back for a leg here. A bit of a high risk move... He's looking for a kneebar by the looks of things. Now both of them are looking for submissions. Winter seems to have locked his on tight now - Wood screams in pain and taps out furiously! It certainly was a high risk move but it's paid off for Winter, as he picks up the win!
