PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Carlos Meira (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Charles Menezes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Menezes has chosen Charlinho, o menino que só queria estudar - Hermes & Renato as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Carlos Meira!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 19 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Charles Menezes!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Felipe Paraventi and Emerson Jorge.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A combination from Menezes does no damage.
Meira changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Menezes tries to avoid it but Meira manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Menezes to the ground. Menezes escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Menezes throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Menezes connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.


It looks like Carlos Meira has been cut.
Meira showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Menezes.
Meira takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Nice sprawl there from Menezes as Meira shoots in.

Menezes fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Meira, pushing him back against the cage.
Menezes wants to break the clinch but can't.
Menezes managing to block the knees to the body from Meira.
Meira has Menezes pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Menezes manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carlos Meira. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Meira tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Menezes wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Meira has him pressed against the cage.
Meira is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Menezes gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Meira tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Meira escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Meira looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Menezes swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Meira fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Menezes avoids it really well and circles away.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Meira tries for a takedown but Menezes sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Menezes displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Meira.
Menezes misses with a few strikes there.
Meira shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Menezes defends it nicely.
Meira shoots in looking for a takedown but Menezes manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Meira's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Menezes stuffs the takedown.
Menezes has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Meira is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Menezes throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Meira closes this distance looking for a takedown but Menezes circles away.
Meira slips a jab and a cross from Menezes.
Menezes throws a series of punches but Meira avoids them all with ease.
Menezes swats away the attempt to clinch by Meira.

Meira shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Meira was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Meira trying to control the position but Menezes is working away.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Meira tries for a kimura but Menezes is defending well.
Menezes regains half guard there - taking advantage of Meira's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Menezes preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.

Menezes is defending against the submission attempts here by Meira.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Meira is working for a submission of some sort.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Menezes is staying active underneath Meira, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Menezes keeping control of the position.
Menezes tries to kick Meira off but Meira keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Menezes wants to improve his position but Meira is controlling well.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Menezes can do anything to dispel that myth.
Menezes is trying to stand back up but Meira is controlling him
Still in half guard, Meira seems content to control.

Meira stands up and beckons Menezes to join him on the feet.
Meira doesn't manage to clinch there - Menezes circles away.
Menezes feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Meiras jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Meira fails with a takedown attempt.
Meira shoots and misses
and Menezes counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.


Meira is rocked!
Menezes looks to land a combination but Meira avoids it well.
Oh Meira is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Menezes fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Meira shoots in looking for a takedown but Menezes manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Meira's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Menezes throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Menezes goes for a small jab and connects. Now Menezes goes in closer pressing the issue. Left hook, right straight! Meira stumbles back but Menezes runs in with a huge uppercut knocking Meira to the ground! What a finish! You have to wonder if Meira will ever be the same after a knockout like that.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:54 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Charles Menezes!
A very excited looking Charles Menezes made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
