Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Burt Howard! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Paul Frederick! The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Alexandre Firmino and Edson Gomes.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sloppy strikes from Frederick. Those never looked like landing. Howard shoots in for a double leg but Frederick sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Howard shoots in but no luck this time. Howard misses with a takedown attempt - Frederick sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Howard seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Burt Howard. That's going to take a lot out of him. Frederick closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Howard did well to prevent Frederick getting side control. Frederick keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action. Howard is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Howard is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Frederick jumps into side control! Frederick is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Howard will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Frederick scoring with punches and elbows. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Howard is trying to buck Frederick off. Frederick cracks Howard with a big elbow. Frederick trying to control the action but Howard is working from the bottom. Howard is looking to reverse the position. Howard on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Howard tries to get out of the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Frederick wants to control but Howard is keeping him busy. Frederick has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Frederick is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Howard is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Howard knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Frederick on the ground. Howard tries to improve position but can't. The ground and pound from Frederick seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent. Howard tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Frederick wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Howard pushes Frederick away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Frederick gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Frederick creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots. Frederick lands a few punches from side control. Howard is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Howard is looking to get back to his feet here but Frederick is keeping cool and he's managed to take Howard's back. Howard is trying to break free.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Howard controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position. Will Frederick go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?
Frederick looking for the choke but no joy. Howard is really stuck here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Frederick keeps control of the position easily here as Howard tries to buck him off.
Howard trying to control the action but Frederick just sinks the hooks in. Frederick lands with a couple of good shots - one to the side of the head and one questionable shot that could be viewed as to the back of the head but the referee lets it go.
Howard trying to control the hands but Frederick breaks the grip. Frederick is throwing punches to the body, looking to soften Howard up.
A lull in the action here.
Frederick lands strikes to the head. We've been informed that Frederick has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight. I really don't envy Howard right now.
Frederick has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Howard's body.
Frederick has Howard flattened out and is raining down punches.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Howard is really stuck here.
Howard is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet. Frederick cracks Howard with a big shot to body and one to the head - really punishing Howard from the back mount here, looking to soften him up.
Howard trying to get back to his feet but Frederick is in full control for now. Frederick throwing strikes from the back - he gets a warning from the referee for striking the back of the head but all these shots are hurting Howard!
Frederick is working the back position looking for the choke. Oh, he's slid into an armbar! Beautiful transition and Howard taps out! Fantastic Jiu Jitsu from Frederick.
