The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ponjev misses with a kick to the body.
A momentary lapse in concentration from Italiano enables Ponjev to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Italiano manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Ponjev tries to free his leg and advance position but Italiano is retaining full guard. Ponjev not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
The ref stands the fighters back up because Paul Lee Italiano just wasn't active enough. Italiano tries to clinch but Ponjev moves away and Ponjev counters by clinching up. Italiano misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Ponjev.

Ponjev is trying to trip Italiano. He has hold of a leg but Italiano is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Ponjev persists though and gets the takedown into guard. Ponjev prevents Italiano from getting back to his feet. Ponjev controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Ponjev stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Italiano swivels though and keeps the full guard. Italiano knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ponjev on the ground.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Sam Ponjev was stalling too much, according to the referee. Italiano looks to clinch and Ponjev counters with a nice double leg into guard. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Ponjev gets to his feet - Italiano follows without any prompting. Ponjev gets a clinch. Ponjev drags the fight down to the ground.
Ponjev looking for a sweep. Not yet Ponjev, not yet. Italiano has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Ponjev is proving hard to escape from. Ponjev pulls Italiano in close to his closed guard and prevents Italiano from doing any damage or advancing position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Paul Lee Italiano. Ponjev changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Italiano looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Ponjev looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Italiano is avoiding damage well.
Ponjev taking a breather here. It looks like Ponjev might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ponjev stands up and we're back to a striking position. Italiano wants to clinch but Ponjev slips to the side and Ponjev moves into the clinch. Italiano tries to land knees in the clinch but Ponjev avoids the damage to the body. Ponjev manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ponjev is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Italiano is aware though and is defending well. Ponjev throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Ponjev working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Italiano doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Italiano manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Italiano preventing the sweep. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Sam Ponjev dominated that round. That's time! Italiano's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Italiano tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Ponjev counters with a nice body shot. Paul Lee Italiano seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Italiano darts in trying to clinch and Ponjev counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. Italiano could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Ponjev's corner is telling him to maintain position. Italiano wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Ponjev manages to pass to side control. Ponjev landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ponjev scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Ponjev not doing much here.
Ponjev not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Ponjev lands with a punch from half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ponjev decides to return to a standing position. Italiano wants to clinch and Ponjev counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Ponjev. Sam Ponjev has got the better of the ground game so far. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Italiano is working an open guard so Ponjev takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Ponjev throws the kick towards the body but Italiano avoids it. Ponjev clinches. Ponjev looking to throw knees to the head but Italiano is blocking nicely.
Italiano tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Ponjev avoids it. Ponjev goes for a takedown in the clinch but Italiano prevents it.

Italiano closes the distance looking to clinch and Ponjev counters into the clinch. Nicely done. Ponjev has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Italiano regains guard immediately. Ponjev won't allow Italiano to get back to his feet. Ponjev works a leg free and moves into half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Italiano tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Ponjev manages to move to mount!
Ponjev controlling the pace for now. Ponjev is standing up, even though he is in mount. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Sam Ponjev showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!
Ponjev looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Italiano! Ponjev is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Italiano knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Ponjev decides to stand back up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Italiano tries to clinch but fails miserably and Ponjev counters with a nice double leg into guard. Ponjev has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Ponjev slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Ponjev cracks Italiano with a big elbow. Ponjev content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Italiano takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Ponjev decides to stand back up. Italiano tries to clinch and Ponjev counters with a takedown into side control. Ponjev taking a breather here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Italiano is trying to escape and get back to his feet. Ponjev creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots. Ponjev tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Ponjev is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

And that's the end of the fight! Sam Ponjev comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. Well Ponjev has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
