PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Seth Pope (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Markie Gono (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gono has chosen Hearts on Fire as his entrance music. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Seth Pope!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Markie Gono!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Ren Mimura and Yuuki Gou.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gono lands with an uppercut that bounces Pope off the cage and back into range.


It looks like Seth Pope has been cut.
Pope looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.

and Pope holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Gono tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Pope smiles and moves away.
Markie Gono seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gono fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Pope checks it well.

Pope gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Pope wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Gono has him pressed against the cage.
Pope could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Pope goes for a takedown in the clinch but Gono prevents it.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Pope pulls Gono in close to prevent any damage.
Pope lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Gono!

Pope has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Pope is landing with some decent strikes but Gono is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Pope throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.

Pope is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Gono has managed to escape the submission attempt.
We've been informed that Gono has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Pope takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Pope postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Gono looks a forlorn figure.

Gono really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pope. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Pope lands a big shot there that rocks Gono but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Pope has managed to clinch.
Pope wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Pope wants to work for an arm triangle but Gono is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
