2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Colin Miller! The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Yukihiro Yamamoto.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Miller throws a jab but it's blocked by Van Kirkland. Van Kirkland keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Miller. Van Kirkland throws an overhand right that lands on Miller's shoulder, as Miller tries to avoid the shot. Van Kirkland gets a double leg takedown into Miller's guard. Miller is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Miller might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Van Kirkland haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Van Kirkland not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Van Kirkland postures up in Miller's guard and throws a big left but Miller blocks it. Van Kirkland's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Miller just misses with a punch to the body.

Miller throws a body punch but Van Kirkland moves out of range. Miller takes a swing at Van Kirkland's ribcage but misses. Colin Miller is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Miller throws a leg kick but Van Kirkland sees it coming and checks it nicely. Van Kirkland closes the distance and clinches up with Miller, looking for a takedown. Van Kirkland pushes Miller against the cage but Miller circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. A slapping leg kick lands for Van Kirkland.
Miller throws a chopping leg kick but Van Kirkland manages to avoid taking any serious damage. Van Kirkland drives through with a takedown into Miller's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. Van Kirkland working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Van Kirkland advances position into side control! Van Kirkland has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Van Kirkland working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Van Kirkland taking a breather here. Miller really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Van Kirkland. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Van Kirkland cracks Miller with a big right hand but Miller just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Van Kirkland is trying to get an arm triangle but Miller is defending well. Van Kirkland tries to land with some ground and pound but misses. Van Kirkland has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Van Kirkland moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sloppy strikes there by Van Kirkland. Van Kirkland scores with a couple of short elbows. Miller being controlled for a moment. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Miller smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button. Miller ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Van Kirkland moves away. Miller throws a body punch but Van Kirkland moves out of range. Miller throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Miller just misses with a punch to the body.
Miller throws a leg kick and Van Kirkland counters with a nice double leg into half guard. Van Kirkland is taking a breather. Miller says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Van Kirkland throwing shots but Miller is blocking nicely. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Well, if Van Kirkland is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Van Kirkland is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. Van Kirkland seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Van Kirkland seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Miller for as long as he can get away with.

We're going to have a standup here because Mikhail Van Kirkland wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Miller misses with a straight left. Colin Miller seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Van Kirkland drives through with a takedown into guard. Van Kirkland not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Miller can do anything to dispel that myth. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Miller working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Van Kirkland.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Mikhail Van Kirkland. Miller jabs Van Kirkland to the body, keeping him at a distance. Miller misses with a body shot.

Miller gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Van Kirkland to score an easy takedown into full guard. Van Kirkland wants to pass the guard but Miller is keeping the position. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Van Kirkland stays in close to Miller's body and controls the position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

This one is all over!
