PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between JJ Thomas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Georg Scott (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Scott has chosen Overkill as his entrance music. Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, JJ Thomas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Georg Scott!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Colin Fray and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thomas tries to score a power double leg takedown but Scott sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Thomas somewhat.
Scott pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Thomas manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Scott on his heels. He'll look to pass Scott's guard now, I'm sure.

Thomas drops back, looking for a kneebar! Scott looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Scott looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Scott!

Scott wants to stand but Thomas is controlling his arm.
Thomas tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Scott wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Thomas holds on to Scott's head and controls the position momentarily.

Thomas bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
Thomas shoots in but Scott avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Thomas shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Scott napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Scott is trying to get back to half guard.

Thomas goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Scott has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Thomas but great work by Scott.

Scott stands up and beckons Thomas to his feet.
Scott throws a sloppy head kick and Thomas moves out of range easily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Thomas changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Thomas throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Thomas tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Scott swivels and escapes.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for JJ Thomas. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Scott.
Thomas keeps the fight on the outside.

Scott tries to close the distance and clinch but Thomas swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Thomas closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Thomas lands in his opponent's guard.

Thomas postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Scott is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Thomas, into his guard.

Thomas is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Scott presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Thomas pulls guard successfully.
Thomas bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Scott's guard.
Thomas advances to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Thomas is trying to work for a kimura but Scott is defending well.
Scott wants to improve his position but Thomas is controlling well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Thomas is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Scott has managed to free his arm - good work.

Thomas is working for a submission of some sort.
Scott trying to control from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

JJ Thomas dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Scott tries a head kick but it misses.
Scott throws a head kick but Thomas moves out of range.
Thomas darts in looking for a takedown but Scott gets double underhooks and turns Thomas into the cage.
Thomas is trying to break the clinch but Scott has him pressed against the cage.
Scott comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.
Thomas lands a left hand.
Scott wants to get back to striking at distance but Thomas won't allow it.

Thomas pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Nice uppercut lands for Thomas. That snapped Scott's head back.
Thomas lands an overhand right.
JJ Thomas is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
A looping hook to the body misses from Scott. Thomas does a little dance to reset his feet.
We've been informed that Scott has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Thomas moves out of range of the strikes.
Thomas looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Thomas scores with a one two! Scott had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Scott takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.

Thomas darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Thomas just misses with a punch to the body.
Scott connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Scott misses with a low kick.
Scott throws a head kick but Thomas moves out of range.
A shot to the liver by Thomas. Beautiful body shot.
Scott swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Thomas counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Georg Scott is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
A decent looking cross lands there for Thomas.
Thomas throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Scott's waist but Scott gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Thomas off to one side.
Thomas tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Scott swivels and escapes.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for JJ Thomas. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Scott throws the kick towards the body but Thomas avoids it.

and Thomas counters with a left and a right that stings Scott.
Scott misses the shot to the body.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Scott misses with a jab, cross combination.
Thomas changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Scott tries to avoid it but Thomas manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Scott to the ground. Scott escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Thomas is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.

Thomas throws a body punch but Scott moves out of range.
Scott takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
A solid leg kick lands there for Scott.
Scott stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Scott wants it to stay on the feet.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

JJ Thomas is winning the standup battle so far.
Scott tries to bum rush Thomas with a series of wild strikes but Thomas uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Scott throws a nice looking combination but Thomas bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Thomas changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Scott tries to avoid it but Thomas manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Scott to the ground. Scott escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Thomas will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Thomas closes the distance and clinches up with Scott, looking for a takedown. Thomas pushes Scott against the cage but Scott circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Scott takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Scott goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Thomas fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Scott scores with a one two! Thomas had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Scott fakes the leg kick and cracks Thomas in the body.
Sloppy strikes from Scott. Those never looked like landing.
Thomas avoids the head kick by Scott.
Scott lands a glancing blow to the side of Thomas's head.
Thomas misses with a takedown attempt - Scott sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Scott throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.

Scott ducks under a wild hook from Thomas.
Scott pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Good exchange - Thomas coming out on top.
Thomas wants to clinch but Scott slips to the side

and Scott counters by clinching up.
I was talking to Thomas's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.

Scott breaks from the clinch.
Scott throws a series of punches but Thomas moves out of range.
Scott looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Scott throws a body kick that misses.
Thomas fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
A nice combination there by Thomas.
Scott throws a sloppy head kick and Thomas moves out of range easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Georg Scott showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Scott looks to score with a jab to the body but Thomas is just out of range.
Thomas will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Thomas throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Scott walks into a straight right hand from Thomas.

Scott tries to keep at a distance but Thomas has taken the fight into the clinch.

Scott escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Scott takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Thomas takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Scott rushes in with a sloppy looking punch

and Thomas counters with a nice double leg into side control. Scott won't be happy with that.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Thomas is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Scott knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Thomas thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Thomas is trying to get an arm triangle but Scott is defending well.

Thomas is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Scott knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Scott wants to get back to his feet.
Scott is looking for a sweep.

Thomas goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Scott rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Thomas's guard! Nice work there by Scott!

Thomas has his foot on Scott's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Scott works his way back into a safe position though.

Thomas tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Thomas looking for a guillotine here but Scott defends easily.
Scott slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Thomas controls Scott momentarily but Scott frees himself.
Scott is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Georg Scott.
Scott throws a sloppy head kick and Thomas moves out of range easily.

Thomas has taken the fight to the clinch.
Scott wants to break the clinch but can't.
Thomas tries to pull guard but Scott holds him up against the cage and eventually Thomas drops back down to his feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Thomas wants to get back to striking at distance but Scott won't allow it.

Thomas is trying to trip Scott. He has hold of a leg but Scott is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Thomas persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
JJ Thomas showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Thomas has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
