Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kaspars Daugavins! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
15 - 15 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Mick Penn! The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Alec Ball and Elvis Blanc.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Daugavins uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Penn has time to react. Penn throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Daugavins. Penn rushes Daugavins and presses him up against the cage. Penn lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage. Penn blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Penn gets through Daugavins's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head. Penn digs a right hand into Daugavins's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Daugavins's gas tank. Daugavins on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Penn has Daugavins pressed against the cage, preventing Daugavins from circling away and getting back to striking at range. Daugavins is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath. Penn creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses. Penn throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Daugavinss head. Daugavins is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Penn is defending well for now. Daugavins throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges. Daugavins stalling in the clinch but Penn improves position. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! With the fighters clinched against the cage, Daugavins creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut. Penn tries to throw a body punch but Daugavins avoids it by throwing Penn back against the cage. Penn misses with a short punch on the inside.
That's one minute gone in the round. Daugavins scores with a shot to the side of Penn's head. Penn can't find room to land a body shot as Daugavins controls the action.
An uppercut to the body lands inside from Penn. Penn misses with a hook to the ribs.
Daugavins misses with the head strike.
Still in the clinch, Penn scores with a nice short uppercut. Come on Daugavins - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Penn throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges. Penn doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Daugavins working hard to break the clinch. Penn softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage. Penn has a couple of punches blocked by Daugavins.
Daugavins is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath. Penn tries to work over Daugavins's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The pace really dropping off here, momentarily. Penn trying to land knees to the body.
Daugavins stalling in the clinch but Penn improves position. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Daugavins landing some nice looking knees to the body.
Daugavins lands a body punch in the clinch. A head punch blocked on the inside by Penn. Daugavins has Penn pressed against the cage.
A nice left hand lands by Penn.
Penn tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked. Daugavins makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut. Penn blocks an uppercut.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Daugavins prevents a takedown attempt there.
A battle for position here, against the cage. Daugavins is leaning against Penn and scores with a nice uppercut to the body. Penn has a couple of punches blocked by Daugavins.
Penn lands a body punch in the clinch. Daugavins misses with a body punch.
Daugavins pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Penn lands with an overhand left. Penn throws a hook but Daugavins blocks it. Good exchange - Penn coming out on top. Good shot there by Penn.
It looks like Kaspars Daugavins has been cut. Daugavins looks to land a combination. Penn sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots. This has been an exciting period of action! Penn throws an off balance right hand
and Daugavins counters with a nice uppercut. The fighters circle momentarily. Daugavins darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Penn is rocked! Daugavins drops Penn with a straight right hand, right on the button! Daugavins follows him down to the mat and pounds him out with hammerfists until the referee jumps in to end the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Kaspars Daugavins! After the fight, Kaspars Daugavins was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
