Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the bantamweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Bruno Da Gaucho! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
15 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Edson Garcia! The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Tarja Halkonen and Ben Zyskovitsi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Da Gaucho tries to keep at a distance but Garcia has taken the fight into the clinch. A short right hand to the side of the head by Garcia. Garcia lands a damaging elbow. A short right hand to the side of the head by Garcia. Garcia trying to land knees to the body.
Still in the clinch, Garcia scores with a nice short uppercut. Garcia lands a right hand. Good body shot from Garcia.
Garcia putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Da Gaucho in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body. Garcia is leaning against Da Gaucho and scores with a nice uppercut to the body. Garcia cracks Da Gaucho with a nice body shot. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Garcia lands a right hand that snaps the head of Da Gaucho backwards. Garcia working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.
That's one minute gone in the round. Garcia throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Garcia lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage. Garcia stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
Garcia tries to land knees in the clinch but Da Gaucho avoids the damage to the body. A short right hand to the side of the head by Garcia. Da Gaucho works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Garcia pulls Da Gaucho in close to prevent any damage. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Da Gaucho with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Da Gaucho wants to control from the top but Garcia keeps moving.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Da Gaucho drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Da Gaucho jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Da Gaucho looking to pass the guard. Garcia has his foot on Da Gaucho's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Da Gaucho works his way back into a safe position though. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Garcia can do anything to dispel that myth. Da Gaucho trying to control the position from guard on top but Garcia is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Garcia really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Da Gaucho. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Garcia is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Da Gaucho is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Da Gaucho is working hard here to advance position. Da Gaucho gets full guard. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Garcia wants to control from the top but Da Gaucho keeps moving. Da Gaucho lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Garcia!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Garcia tries to hold on but Da Gaucho pushes him away. Garcia is working to get back to half guard.
Da Gaucho is working for a guillotine from mount but Garcia frees his head quite easily.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Garcia has given up his back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Edson Garcia dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Da Gaucho avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Garcia tries to close the distance and clinch up but Da Gaucho swats him away and circles back towards the center. Bruno Da Gaucho is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Garcia throws a head kick that misses. Da Gaucho gets a takedown into half guard. Da Gaucho is looking to advance position but Garcia won't allow it. Da Gaucho maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Garcia could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Da Gaucho has cracked it and Garcia is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Da Gaucho!
