PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mathias Larzon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Banana Split (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Larzon comes to the ring accompanied by Detox by Millencolin. Mathias Larzon had a look across the ring there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Mathias Larzon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Banana Split!
The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Roosa Järviläinen and Tarja Halkonen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Split shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Split was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Larzon is squirming around, avoiding Split's attempts to control the action.
Split controlling the pace for now.
Split can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Larzon is looking to escape.
Larzon is trying desperately to improve position.

Split goes for an armbar but Larzon turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Larzon.

Split looking to hit a scissor sweep but Larzon is one step ahead there.

Split has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Larzon can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Split wants to hit a switch here but Larzon passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Split there!
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Larzon can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Split is looking to escape.

Split has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Larzon is working away from the top position though.
Larzon wants to stand but Split has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Split makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Split.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Split is trying to control the position but Larzon postures up.

Despite being in the dominant position, Banana Split just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Larzon instigates a clinch.
Split has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Larzon is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Split takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Larzon is looking to clinch but Split is avoiding it.
Larzon moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.

Larzon closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Split to the mat! Split manages to get full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Larzon gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Larzon has clasped his hands together around Split's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Split tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Larzon wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Larzon is taking a breather. Split says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Larzon scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
No luck for Larzon with that takedown attempt.
Split tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Larzon swivels and escapes.

Larzon is not content to let Split control the position.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Split is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Split is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Split not doing much here.
Split is looking to take a break and control but Larzon is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Larzon goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Split tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Larzon swivels and escapes.
Split keeps the fight on the outside.
Mathias Larzon is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
No luck for Split with that takedown attempt.

That was a close second round but I would say that Mathias Larzon will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Larzon connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.

and Split counters with a shoot takedown. Larzon fights it but they end up in guard.
Split wants to pass the guard but Larzon is keeping the position.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Larzon manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Banana Split has got the better of the ground game so far.
Split tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Larzon looking to control but Split is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Split is wriggling around trying to escape.
Split tries to hold on but Larzon pushes him away.
Split is trying desperately to improve position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mathias Larzon is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Split wants to control but Larzon is having none of it.
Split is looking to improve his position but Larzon isn't that keen on the idea.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mathias Larzon.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Larzon, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
