Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Herman Avery (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Sampson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Matt Sampson is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Herman Avery! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Matt Sampson! The judges for this bout are Ben Watson, Darius Henderson and Donatello Bradman.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sampson has Avery up against the cage in a clinch.
Avery pulls Sampson into guard.
Sampson must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Avery wants to get back to his feet but Sampson is in a dominant position and won't allow it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sampson postures up in Avery's guard and throws a big left but Avery blocks it. Avery is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Avery working for a triangle but Sampson defends it easily.
Sampson wants to get up but he can't break Avery's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Avery keeping moving, preventing Sampson from controlling successfully. Avery manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage. Avery decides to pull guard. Sampson looking to sit in guard and control but Avery gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Avery wants to stand but Sampson is controlling his posture from full guard. Sampson is looking to stand back up but Avery counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Sampson. Avery is trying to work for a kimura but Sampson is defending well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Avery stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Sampson to get to his feet. Sampson darts in and clinches Avery up against the cage. Sampson breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Sampson has managed to clinch.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Sampson pulls guard successfully.
Avery is in close to Sampson's body, working some short punches and elbows. Sampson wants to stand up but Avery is controlling him. Sampson controls Avery momentarily but Avery frees himself. Avery gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Avery takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming. Matt Sampson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Sampson shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Avery manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Sampson stops Avery from standing up. Avery will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Sampson has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Avery is proving hard to escape from. Avery is trying to keep Sampson in close.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Avery wants to sweep but no luck. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Avery blocks a jab. Sampson shoots in and gets a takedown into Avery's guard. Sampson has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Avery is proving hard to escape from. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Sampson wants to pass the guard but Avery is keeping the position. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Avery looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Matt Sampson will probably get the nod. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Sampson shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Avery controlling the position. Avery has his foot on Sampson's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Sampson works his way back into a safe position though. Sampson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Avery swivels though and keeps the full guard. Sampson trying to stand up but can't free himself from Avery's guard. Sampson missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Sampson tries to free his leg and advance position but Avery is retaining full guard. Avery wants to stand up but Sampson is controlling him. Avery trying to control the position here.
That's one minute gone in the round. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Avery's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Herman Avery has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet. Sampson looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Avery gets tackled into the cage by Sampson. Sampson maintains the clinch. Sampson pulls guard. Avery with a flurry of punches that miss. Sampson looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Avery puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard. Avery postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Sampson to stand up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sampson has closed the distance and engaged Avery in a clinch.

Nice straight punches there by Sampson. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Sampson. Avery gets tackled into the cage by Sampson. Sampson maintains the clinch. Sampson jumps guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Avery stands up and waves to Sampson to follow him. Sampson rushes Avery and presses him up against the cage. Sampson creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Avery's defenses. Sampson has had enough of the clinch but Avery keeps him there for the moment. Avery blocks the elbow strike.
Sampson avoids a wild elbow strike from Avery. Sampson gets a nice trip takedown into half guard. Avery regains full guard. Nicely done.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Avery is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Sampson presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat. Sampson pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Sampson has closed the distance and engaged Avery in a clinch.
Avery has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Sampson uses from the top position. Sampson postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Sampson throws an elbow that misses. Avery uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Sampson's guard. Nice move by Avery! Sampson looking to hit a scissor sweep but Avery is one step ahead there. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Sampson can do anything to dispel that myth. Avery stands up from Sampson's guard - Avery perhaps looking for a knockout.

Matt Sampson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!
Sampson feints and as Avery raises his hands in defense, Sampson changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Avery is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Sampson is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but Avery has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Sampson is looking to defend but Avery has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Sampson! Avery pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Sampson taps out and this one is all over!
