Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Wesley Julianno! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
17 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Patrick Staller! The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Trevor Gratis and Robert Douchet.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Julianno darts in and out, connecting with a jab. Julianno comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range. Julianno looks to throw the jab but Staller is out of range. Staller shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Julianno is trying to defend but Staller finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Staller misses with a head shot. Julianno uses the momentum to regain guard. Staller tries to free his leg and advance position but Julianno is retaining full guard. Julianno utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Staller drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Julianno manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Staller has Julianno in his guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Julianno wants to stand but Staller is controlling his posture from full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Julianno pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Staller is keeping the position for now. Staller keeping moving, preventing Julianno from controlling successfully. Staller has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Julianno won't allow Staller to sweep him here. Staller controlling the position. Julianno got a little sloppy there for a moment and Staller has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Julianno has managed to get both his arms back between Staller's legs - danger averted. Julianno wants to get up but he can't break Staller's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Julianno preventing the sweep. Staller trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Staller is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a triangle but Julianno frees his head nicely. Oh but Staller has switched to an armbar! Julianno is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
