PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sky Hawk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dante B (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hawk kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genuis that is What a Rush. Sky Hawk has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Sky Hawk! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dante B! The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Tiny Johnson and Cecil Peabody.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! B gets the takedown into side control. Hawk tries to get back to half guard but can't. B misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Hawk is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked B off and has taken his back! The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Hawk has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, B has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Hawk controlling well, preventing B from escaping the position.
B covers up after taking a massive shot to the side of the head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. You can see the frustration on B's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
B turns into Hawk and is now in his guard.
Hawk trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from! B works a leg free and moves into half guard. Hawk wants to get back to full guard. Hawk avoiding damage under a succession of punches from B. Hawk flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Hawk taking some punishment here, with B in his half guard. Hawk on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Hawk tries to get out of the position. B is controlling the pace.
Hawk gets back to full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. B is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. B must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Hawk is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. B lands a couple of elbows. Hawk tries to strike from the bottom.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. B drives through with a takedown into guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. B tries to free his leg and advance position but Hawk is retaining full guard. Hawk is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. B connects with a couple of short punches. Hawk keeping full guard, as B tries to pass. B really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Hawk. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. B stands up over Hawk, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. B scoring with punches to the head and body. B is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Hawk wants to sweep but no luck.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. B fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. B misses with a takedown attempt - Hawk sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. B looks gassed! B fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Sky Hawk has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dante B. Hawk scores with a takedown into B's guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hawk loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. B looking for a sweep. Not yet B, not yet. Hawk lands a couple of digs. Hawk preventing the sweep. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Hawk's corner. There ya go! There ya go! B tries to land a sweep but no joy. B can't keep his opponent in guard - Hawk advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. B is refusing to be controlled, as Hawk sits in half guard. Hawk tries to pass the half guard into mount. B knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Hawk is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. Hawk scoring with strikes to the body and head.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. B wants to control but Hawk is keeping busy and won't allow it. B is staying active underneath Hawk, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Hawk is trying to work for a kimura but B is defending well.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Hawk lands a with a good body shot. B doesn't succeed with the takedown and Hawk counters with a lovely straight right hand! Good standup being displayed there by Hawk as he connects with a hook. Jab by Hawk. Hawk drives through with a takedown into guard. Hawk won't allow B to sweep him here. Hawk slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Sky Hawk dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Hawk fails with a takedown attempt. Hawk lands with an uppercut that bounces B off the cage and back into rage. B shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Hawk counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Hawk. B trying to strike off his back.
Hawk wants to control from the top but B keeps moving. Hawk trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. B trying to keep a closed guard but Hawk is proving a slippery customer.
Sky Hawk overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. B utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. B tries to land a sweep but no joy. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Hawk's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
That's one minute gone in the round. Hawk looking to pass the guard.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground. Hawk fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done. B shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away. B tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Hawk keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
B content just to control the position here. B pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage. B cracks Hawk with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Hawk is looking to improve his position but B isn't that keen on the idea. B has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Hawk's face.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hawk sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. Hawk slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. B stopping the sweep attempt from Hawk. Hawk is trying to control the position but B postures up. B wants to control from the top but Hawk keeps moving. Hawk is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Hawk striking off his back but it's not causing B any problems.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hawk manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. B manages to get himself to full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. B scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Sloppy strikes there by B. Hawk manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu! B is trying to maintain the position but Hawk is very close to passing his half guard. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Hawk connects with a nice short shot to B's temple. Hawk is figuring out what he wants to do next. Hawk throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Hawk is figuring out what he wants to do next. B striking from the bottom. B is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Hawk wants to work for an arm triangle but B is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Sky Hawk dominated that second round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!
B shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than B was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Hawk tries to lock up and control but B gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Hawk is looking to get to half guard. BOOM! B connects with a massive shot to the dome!

Hawk is working hard here to advance position. B tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Hawk tries to get back to half guard but can't. Hawk is squirming around, avoiding B's attempts to control the action. B scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. B looking to control but Hawk is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Hawk flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.
B looking to finish Hawk with some ground and pound. This is bad for Hawk! Hawk taking shots to the head. Hawk slips a leg in and gets back to half guard. Hawk is looking to improve his position.
B is keen to just control but Hawk is a slippery customer. B might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Hawk kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Hawk moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. B won't allow Hawk to sweep him here.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. B shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. B showed some decent athleticism there. B seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Hawk does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. B wants to free his trapped foot but Hawk is holding on for dear life with his legs. Hawk moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Connects with an elbow from the bottom, proving to the judges that he's still active off his back.
That's three minutes gone in the round. B wants to control from the top but Hawk keeps moving. B throws a strike but Hawk rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Hawk with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Hawk keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of B's head. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Hawk accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. B tries to land a sweep but no joy. Hawk slips nicely into half guard. B is looking for a sweep. Hawk is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. B won't allow Hawk to pass to mount. B blocking the ground and pound attempt from Hawk.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. B closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Hawk is looking to improve his position.
B wants to take a breather but Hawk is having none of it. Hawk is controlling B's position as best he can from this difficult position. Hawk trying to hold on to B's head to control him but B postures up.

B perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. B is looking to take a break and control but Hawk is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. The fighters are battling for position here. Hawk manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Dante B has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Hawk bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in B's guard.
And that's the end of the fight! Dante B comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. Well Hawk has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
