Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Joash Walker! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Ellert Roberts! The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Steven Brown and Donald Grub.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Walker gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Walker is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Roberts postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Roberts trying to control the position from guard on top but Walker is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Walker keeping full guard, as Roberts tries to pass. My spies in Finn Warriors Gym inform me that Roberts has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! Walker avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Roberts lands a couple of digs. Walker has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Roberts can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Walker is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Roberts defends well. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Roberts is looking to work some ground and pound but Walker has wrist control. Roberts throws a big elbow that misses. Walker throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Roberts escapes and throws Walker's legs to the side, diving into side control! Roberts creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Walker sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
That's one minute gone in the round. Walker tries to improve position but can't. Walker wants to get back to his feet but Roberts drags him back down. Walker is not content to let Roberts control the position. Roberts stands up and we're back to a striking position. Walker misses with a body shot.
Walker misses with a wild body shot. Joash Walker seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Sloppy strikes from Walker. Those never looked like landing. Roberts forces Walker back against the cage and clinches. Walker is trying to break the clinch but Roberts is controlling him. Walker wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Walker is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Roberts is defending well for now. Roberts escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Walker looks for the body kick but Roberts saw that one coming. Roberts misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Walker misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Roberts scores with a jab to the body. Roberts fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Walker misses with a looping right. Walker avoids the head kick by Roberts.
Roberts closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Roberts lands in his opponent's guard. This has been an exciting period of action! Roberts got a little sloppy there for a moment and Walker has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Roberts has managed to get both his arms back between Walker's legs - danger averted. Roberts stands and steps away. Walker gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. Walker tried to score with a low kick but Roberts checks it. Roberts clinches up against the cage. Roberts escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Walker throws a leg kick that misses. Roberts drives through with a takedown into Walker's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. Walker escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Roberts gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Roberts stands up from Walker's guard - Roberts perhaps looking for a knockout.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Walker scores with a hook. Roberts changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Walker thows a body shot but no joy. Roberts displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination. Walker dodges the punch combination from Roberts.
Walker throws a lazy uppercut
and Roberts counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work. Walker looks up at the clock. Bad move! Roberts lands a right hand from hell, dropping Walker. Roberts pounces and finishes the fight with a flurry of punches and elbows.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:34 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Ellert Roberts!
