Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
27 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Davor Velcic! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
12 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Randy West! The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Anni Minnemäki and Johanna Lukiainen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! West throws out a loose jab but Velcic uses good head movement to avoid it. West misses with a jab, cross combination.
West takes one to the side of the head.
West scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent. Nice sprawl there from West as Velcic shoots in. Velcic throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. West tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Velcic is in West's guard. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Velcic accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. West is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Velcic pushing down on West's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Velcic not landing any meaningful shots this time. West is not content to let Velcic control the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Velcic missing with the ground and pound from half guard. West wants to control but Velcic is keeping busy.
Velcic working over West with some ground and pound. West looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. West is in trouble now - Velcic has advanced to mount! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. West really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
BOOM! Velcic connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Velcic has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Velcic landing strikes from the mount and West is in trouble!
West is rocked! The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Velcic with the ground and pound from mount. West is still in real trouble! Can Velcic finish him? West is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Velcic postures up and throws a couple of big shots that have West in real trouble here! The ref calls for West to improve his position which he doesn't do, so the referee has no choice but to end the fight due to the strikes!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:29 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Davor Velcic! An out of breath Davor Velcic thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
