PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ben Konu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Erwin Rommel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Konu comes into the arena with Disturbed-Ten Thousand Fist blaring out of the sound system. Rommel is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Eric B. & Rakim - Don't Sweat The Technique. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Ben Konu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Erwin Rommel!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Blasius, Aafke Stam and Saam Ante.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Konu throws a lazy right hand but Rommel sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Rommel decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Rommel is trying to work for a kimura but Konu is defending well.

Konu is defending against the submission attempts here by Rommel.
Konu wants to get back to his feet.
Konu knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Rommel on the ground.
Konu gets back to full guard.
Konu seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rommel sitting in guard here, content to control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Rommel is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Konu wants to stand up but Rommel is controlling him.

Konu is trying to control the position but Rommel postures up.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Erwin Rommel was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Konu misses with a leg kick.

Rommel drives through with a takedown into Konu's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Rommel pushing down on Konu's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Konu keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Rommel wants to pass the guard but Konu is defending well.

Rommel seems to be working for a kimura but Konu defends the submission attempt.
Konu has hold of Rommel's hands but Rommel slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Well, if Rommel is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Rommel looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Konu tries to roll over but Rommel keeps him under control.
Rommel performing his best blanket impression for a moment.

Konu is looking for a sweep. Rommel is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Rommel not doing much here.

Konu is defending against the submission attempts here by Rommel.
Well, if Rommel is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Rommel wants to pass to mount but Konu is defending the position.

Rommel decides to stand up.
Rommel has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Konu is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Rommel is trying hard to land a takedown here. Konu sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Konu falls off balance throwing a combination

and Rommel counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Rommel.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Rommel prevents Konu from getting back to his feet.
Rommel engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rommel advances position into side control!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Erwin Rommel dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Konu leaves Rommel with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Rommel shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Konu sprawls well. Konu wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Rommel gets slowly back to his feet.
Konu throws a low kick but Rommel avoids it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Konu misses with a few strikes there.
Konu throws a solid leg kick but Rommel takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Konu.
Rommel moves out of range as Konu strikes.

That's one minute gone in the round.
A lazy left from Konu finds it's target.
Konu is looking to score with low kicks.
Rommel walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.

Rommel moves into the clinch.

Rommel manages to pull guard.
Konu wants to stand and escape but instead Rommel has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Rommel thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Rommel stands up over Konu, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Rommel tries to free his leg and advance position but Konu is retaining full guard.
Konu is looking to stand back up but Rommel counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Konu.
Rommel content to control rather than advance.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rommel moves nicely into side control.

Rommel working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Rommel tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Rommel has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Rommel trying to control but Konu is having none of it.
Konu is flailing around like a fish out of water, trying to land strikes.
Konu has given up his back. Will we see Rommel going for some submissions?

Rommel is working for the choke. He's slipped one arm under the chin. Konu has to defend the other arm for all he's worth... but Rommel has managed to get that arm free too and he's tightening the choke! Konu taps out and looks absolutely disgusted with himself. Rommel doesn't care though - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Erwin Rommel!
During a confident post fight interview, Erwin Rommel thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
In defeat, Ben Konu stepped up to the mic, saying 'I promise you i will try to do better next time.'.
