PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Angelo Charles (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Berry Choi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Choi is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by You're going down. The key to victory for Angelo Charles has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Angelo Charles!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Berry Choi!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Jonathan Paton and David Schapiro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Choi dives in and grabs Charles's left leg, looking for a takedown. Charles pushes down on Choi's head and hops out.
Charles could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Charles tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Choi paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Charles tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Choi manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Charles is looking to clinch but Choi is avoiding it.
Charles tries to bum rush Choi with a series of wild strikes but Choi uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Choi darts in and clinches Charles up against the cage.
Charles stalls.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Choi takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
Choi wants a takedown but no success here.
A frustrated look appears on Charles's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Charles tries to clinch up but Choi circles away and keeps his distance.
Charles tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Choi defends well and Charles ends up having to push Choi into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Charles is trying to break the clinch but Choi is controlling him.
Charles tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Choi can't get the takedown.
Angelo Charles has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Berry Choi.

Choi lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Choi moves into full mount! Charles won't be happy about that!

and Charles counters with a solid body kick.

Choi circles away from the clinch attempt.

Choi closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Charles quickly recovers to half guard.

Choi missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Charles is trying to stand back up but Choi is controlling him
Choi content to control rather than advance.
Choi passes into side control, despite Charles's attempt to control the position.
Choi tries to stand but Charles is controlling his head.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Choi working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Charles tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Choi is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Charles has escaped the position, nice work there.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Charles manages to get back to half guard.

Choi is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Choi is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Charles's half guard.

Choi is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Choi winds up and cracks Charles with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Charles might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
It looks like Choi is going to stand back up.

Charles kicks Choi off and gets back to his feet.
Charles moves in looking to clinch but Choi pushes him off.

Choi changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Charles tries to avoid it but Choi manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Charles to the ground. Charles escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Charles's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Charles duly obliges.
Choi tries for a takedown but Charles sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Choi closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Charles is trying to control but can't.
Charles is trying to get back to full guard.
Charles looks like he's trying to stand up.

Choi tries to pass to full mount but Charles defends it.
Charles moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Choi stops Charles from standing up.

Charles kicks Choi off and gets to his feet.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Choi fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Charles sprawls well initially but Choi persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Choi lands a nice short elbow.
Choi content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Choi slips a nice elbow through Charles's hands, connecting with Charles's forehead.
Choi stops Charles from getting back to his feet.
Choi lands with a punch from half guard.
Choi is looking to take a break and control but Charles is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Choi seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Charles is trying to stand back up but Choi is controlling him
Charles wants to control but Choi is keeping busy and won't allow it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Berry Choi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Choi ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Choi no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Choi is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Charles wanted to stand there but Choi had control of the position.
Choi wants to stand up but Charles is controlling him.
Charles is looking to work some ground and pound but Choi has wrist control.

Choi working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Charles doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Charles manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Charles would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Choi working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Charles doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Charles manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Choi takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Charles throws a big elbow that misses.

Choi wants to sweep but no luck.
Charles is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

Charles drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Charles jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Charles has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Choi can do anything to dispel that myth.

Charles throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Choi works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Charles wants to stand but Choi is controlling his posture from full guard.

Charles drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Choi manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Charles has Choi in his guard.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Charles wants to get back to his feet but Choi passes into half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Angelo Charles.
I think Choi has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
