Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alexander Volkov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kanu Ogwonna (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Volkov kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Hindabuilding. Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Alexander Volkov! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Kanu Ogwonna! The judges for this bout are Nard Betker, Radbod Blank and Paul Aken.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Volkov lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Volkov.
It looks like Kanu Ogwonna has been cut. Ogwonna decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Volkov is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Ogwonna scores with a couple of nice shots. Ogwonna is keen to just control but Volkov is a slippery customer. Volkov wants to get back to his feet. Ogwonna prevents Volkov from improving his position. Ogwonna is looking to take a break and control but Volkov is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Ogwonna drops an elbow to the side of Volkov's head. This has been an exciting period of action! Volkov wants to control but Ogwonna is keeping busy.
Ogwonna scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Ogwonna lands with a punch from half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ogwonna working Volkov over with strikes. Volkov is looking for a sweep. Ogwonna is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Volkov trying to control but Ogwonna postures up.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Volkov is staying active underneath Ogwonna, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Volkov wants to control but Ogwonna is keeping busy and won't allow it. Volkov on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. Ogwonna stops Volkov from getting back to his feet.
Volkov is refusing to be controlled, as Ogwonna sits in half guard. Ogwonna tries to pass the half guard into mount. Volkov knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Kanu Ogwonna. Ogwonna moves into range and clinches up with Volkov. Volkov is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Ogwonna pulls him back up using the underhooks. Volkov looking for a takedown. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Ogwonna has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Ogwonna pulls Volkov into guard.
Volkov wants to control from the top but Ogwonna keeps moving. Ogwonna is pulling down on Volkov's head to control his posture.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Volkov trying to control the position from guard on top but Ogwonna is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Ogwonna drives through with a takedown into Volkov's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Ogwonna working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Volkov working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Ogwonna doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Ogwonna manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Ogwonna lands a couple of digs. Ogwonna working some strikes from top position. Volkov being controlled here, momentarily. Ogwonna lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. Volkov is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Ogwonna defends well. Volkov wants to sweep here but Ogwonna controlling him for the moment.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ogwonna stands up over Volkov, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Ogwonna must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Ogwonna stopping the sweep attempt from Volkov. Ogwonna wants to control from the top but Volkov keeps moving. Volkov looking for a triangle here. Ogwonna is fighting it but it looks tight! Volkov pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Ogwonna is tapping out - this one is all over!
