PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Rodney Leonard Stubbs (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rodrigo Barra (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Barra has chosen Walk Like A Warrior - Dead Prez as his entrance music. Rodrigo Barra told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rodney Leonard Stubbs!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rodrigo Barra!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Felipe Paraventi and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stubbs circles away from the clinch attempt.

Barra closes the distance and clinches.
Stubbs can't get the takedown.
Barra manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Barra gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.


It looks like Rodney Leonard Stubbs has been cut.
Stubbs goes for a takedown in the clinch but Barra prevents it.
Barra prevents a takedown attempt there.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rodney Leonard Stubbs. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Stubbs goes for a takedown attempt but Barra pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Barra gets caught flat footed, as Stubbs shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Barra keeping full guard, as Stubbs tries to pass.
Barra manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Stubbs manages to get himself to full guard.

Stubbs has his foot on Barra's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Barra works his way back into a safe position though.

Stubbs is looking for a triangle but Barra pushes his legs off easily.
Barra loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Barra tries to free his leg and advance position but Stubbs is retaining full guard.

Stubbs throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Barra escapes and throws Stubbs's legs to the side, diving into side control!

That's one minute gone in the round.
Stubbs tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Barra wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Barra creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Stubbs sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Stubbs tries to buck Barra off but Barra is having none of it.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Stubbs shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Stubbs showed some decent athleticism there.
Stubbs is breathing heavily.
Stubbs stops Barra from getting back to his feet.
Barra really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Stubbs. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Stubbs is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

Stubbs has control of Barra's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Barra regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Barra keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Stubbs wants to take his opponent's back but Barra doesn't allow it.
Barra can't escape the position.

Stubbs has hold of Barra's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Barra manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Stubbs looking for a guillotine from mount but Barra is having none of it.
Barra is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Barra tries to hold on but Stubbs postures up.

Barra defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Stubbs.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Stubbs looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

Stubbs is working for a guillotine from mount but Barra frees his head quite easily.
Barra is desperately trying to improve his position but Stubbs has a good base and remains in mount.
Barra wants to control but Stubbs is having none of it.
Stubbs works his way to his opponent's back.
Stubbs is not going to allow Barra to sit and survive in this position.

Stubbs working for the rear naked choke here. He's got one arm under but Barra is defending well. A couple of punches soften him up though and Stubbs has tightened the hold! This one could be all over! It is! Barra taps out!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:05 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Rodney Leonard Stubbs!
