PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kenny Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brent Carbinson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Brent Carbinson was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kenny Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Brent Carbinson!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Robert Douchet and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carbinson misses with a low kick.

Penn decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Penn perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Penn escapes and gets back to his feet.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Penn.
Carbinson throws a head kick that half lands.


It looks like Kenny Penn has been cut.
Penn shoots in but no luck this time.
Nice takedown defense from Carbinson. No joy for Penn on that attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kenny Penn. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Penn shoots in for a double leg but Carbinson sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Penn gets cracked there but stands up to it.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Carbinson fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Penn.
Penn misses with an attempted mid kick.
Penn is breathing heavily.
Penn wants to clinch up but Carbinson keeps it at a distance.
Penn really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Carbinson looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Carbinson seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Carbinson postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Penn to stand up.
Carbinson lands a high kick!

Carbinson closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the ropes.

Carbinson has Penn pressed up against the ropes. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Carbinson pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Penn tumbling to the mat - Carbinson dives into Penn's guard.

Penn is trying to control Carbinson's posture but Carbinson avoids it.

Penn gets caught flat footed, as Carbinson shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Carbinson controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Carbinson has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Penn is proving hard to escape from.

Carbinson stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Carbinson feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Carbinson advances to half guard.

Penn is trying to get back to full guard.
Penn wants to control but Carbinson is keeping busy.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Penn is defending against the submission attempts here by Carbinson.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Carbinson tries to stand and escape but Penn is controlling the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Penn fails with the takedown
and Carbinson counters with a flying knee. Nice.

Carbinson shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

Penn sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Carbinson not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Penn tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Carbinson manages to move to mount!
Carbinson takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Penn is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Carbinson controlling the position easily from mount.
Carbinson's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Penn really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Despite being in the dominant position, Brent Carbinson just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Carbinson drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Penn looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Penn looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Carbinson puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Carbinson wants to pass to mount but Penn is defending the position.
Penn pushes Carbinson off looking to stand but Carbinson dives back in and keeps control.
Penn has hold of Carbinson's hands but Carbinson slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Carbinson in particular looking to stall.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Penn is looking to control Carbinson's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Penn avoid being mounted?

And that's the end of the fight!
Brent Carbinson comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Carbinson has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
