Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Woo Jin Ryu! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Aaron Alverez! The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Joseph Jones and Jonathan Paton.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Alverez gets caught napping as Ryu dives in and scores a takedown. Alverez manages to retain guard. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Alverez bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Ryu's guard. Alverez wants to stand but Ryu has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Alverez looking to sit in guard and control but Ryu gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Ryu passes easily into side control. Nice work. Alverez tries to bench press Ryu off him but Ryu keeps the position. Ryu knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Alverez on the ground. Ryu controlling from side mount. Alverez is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Alverez prevents Ryu from moving into mount. Alverez throws a couple of strikes even though he's not really in a good position to do so.

That's one minute gone in the round. Ryu wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Alverez, who protects the arm well. Ryu swings around for an armbar but Alverez sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Ryu's guard. Alverez wants to pass the guard but Ryu is keeping the position. Ryu keeping moving, preventing Alverez from controlling successfully. Ryu looking for subs off his back but Alverez has passed one foot through into half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Alverez throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Ryu is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Alverez is nestled in close to Ryu, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ryu wants to get back to full guard. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Ryu is working hard here to advance position. Alverez stands up from half guard. Alverez shoots and misses and Ryu counters with a nice double leg into guard. Alverez is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Ryu slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Alverez tries to buck Ryu off but Ryu is having none of it. Check out the look on Ryu's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Alverez regains half guard, as Ryu was trying to land strikes. Ryu seems to be looking for submissions.
Alverez looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Alverez regains full guard. Nicely done. Ryu might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Alverez preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Ryu postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Alverez is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Ryu, into his guard. Alverez trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Woo Jin Ryu dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Alverez wants to get back to his feet.
Ryu is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Alverez is just riding it out for now. Ryu eventually gives up the hold. Ryu is thwarting Alverez's attempts to control the position. Ryu is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Ryu lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
That's one minute gone in the round. Alverez won't allow Ryu to pass to mount. Ryu is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Alverez defends it well. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ryu is working for a kimura but Alverez is defending it quite comfortably.
Alverez wants to control but Ryu is keeping busy and won't allow it. Ryu trying to control the pace. Alverez trying to hold on to Ryu's head to control him but Ryu postures up.

Ryu tries to pass the half guard into mount. Alverez knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Ryu working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. Ryu is working for a submission of some sort.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Ryu looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Ryu is looking to pass Alverez's guard but actually Alverez recovers to full guard. Ryu works over Alverez with some ground and pound from guard. Ryu is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Ryu pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Alverez is keeping the position for now. Alverez looking to control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ryu postures up and lands a big shot to Alverez's brow. Woo Jin Ryu overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Alverez is trying to control the position but Ryu postures up. Alverez looking to sweep here. No luck so far. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Ryu throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Alverez works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Alverez pulls Ryu in close to his closed guard and prevents Ryu from doing any damage or advancing position. Alverez working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Ryu. Ryu drops back, looking for a kneebar! Alverez looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Alverez looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Alverez! Ryu can't do much from the bottom here. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Alverez remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A telegraphed right hand from Alverez misses the target. Alverez gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Ryu counters with a single leg into guard. Alverez didn't expect that. Alverez trying to control the position.
Ryu is working Alverez over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Ryu loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Ryu has gone for a leg lock! Alverez slips out almost immediately though and dives into Ryu's guard. Alverez has his opponent's back and is working for the choke. Alverez slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Alverez has the hooks in. Ryu is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. Alverez is working for a rear naked choke. Ryu is not defending it well and Alverez has tightened it up quickly! This could be all over! Ryu refuses to tap and goes to sleep, forcing the referee to intervene. A little trickle of blood came out of Ryu's nose as his head slumped to the floor. That is naaaasty!
