Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, RikI Machida! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Daichi Akiyama! The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Yuuki Gou.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Akiyama comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range. Machida looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this! Akiyama shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Akiyama is pressing down on Machida's thigh, looking to free his foot. Machida is holding on for now. Well, if Akiyama is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
It looks like Akiyama might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Daichi Akiyama wasn't active enough on the ground. Akiyama lands a head kick!
That's one minute gone in the round. Machida looks for a takedown but Akiyama sprawls well. Akiyama takes the fight into the clinch. Akiyama pulls guard effortlessly. Machida trying to control the position from guard on top but Akiyama is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Akiyama throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
We've been hearing good reports from Machida's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Akiyama is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Akiyama wants to stand up but Machida is controlling him.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Akiyama rushes Machida and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Akiyama successfully pulls guard.
Machida wants to control from the top but Akiyama keeps moving. Akiyama really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Machida. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Akiyama seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
That's three minutes gone in the round. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Daichi Akiyama has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet. Akiyama fails with a takedown attempt from distance. The fight moves into the clinch position. Akiyama digs a right hand into Machida's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Machida's gas tank. Machida misses with a hook to the ribs.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Akiyama is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Akiyama wants to sweep here but Machida controlling him for the moment. Machida has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Akiyama is proving hard to escape from. Akiyama is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Machida wanted to stand there but Akiyama had control of the position. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Akiyama looking to hit a scissor sweep but Machida is one step ahead there. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Daichi Akiyama dominated that round. That's time! Machida's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Akiyama darts in and clinches Machida up against the cage. Akiyama is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Machida jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Akiyama walks away with a smile on his face. Machida gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Akiyama has taken the fight to the clinch.
Akiyama ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Akiyama no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. Akiyama keeping moving, preventing Machida from controlling successfully. Akiyama is looking to stand up but Machida isn't so interested in that idea. Akiyama working for a triangle but Machida defends it easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Akiyama trying to control the position here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Let's hope that Akiyama has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Machida stands and throws Akiyama's legs to the side, diving into side control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Akiyama is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Machida off and has taken his back!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Akiyama throws a big right hand but he misses and hits the mat. Ouch. Machida trying to control the position but Akiyama manages to sink in the hooks. Akiyama looking for the RNC. Machida defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Akiyama's arms. Akiyama controlling the position well here. Machida rolled but Akiyama kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Akiyama is hanging on to Machida's back as he tries to escape.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Akiyama biding his time, controlling Machida. Akiyama misses with punches from the back. Akiyama misses with punches from the back. Machida fending off the submission attempt from Akiyama. Akiyama biding his time, looking for the opening.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Daichi Akiyama showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.
Akiyama fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Akiyama shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Machida as he jumps to the side. Akiyama connects with a high kick. Machida looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. No luck with that takedown attempt from Akiyama. RikI Machida has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Daichi Akiyama. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Akiyama shoots for a takedown but Machida saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Akiyama clinches.
That's one minute gone in the round. Akiyama tries to score a body lock takedown but Machida shows good agility there to stay on his feet. Machida is trying to push Akiyama away but Akiyama has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere. Akiyama connects with a nasty looking knee right to Machida's face.

Machida wants to control from the top but Akiyama keeps moving. Akiyama looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Machida wants to control from the top but Akiyama keeps moving. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Machida with a flurry of punches that miss.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Machida stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Akiyama swivels though and keeps the full guard. Akiyama kicks Machida off and gets to his feet. Akiyama looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Machida is fending him off so far but Akiyama persists. Nope, Machida circles away and we're back to standing. Akiyama tries to clinch but Machida moves out of range. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Machida. Akiyama shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Machida goes for a spinning back kick but it misses. Akiyama darts in looking for a takedown but Machida gets double underhooks and turns Akiyama into the cage.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Machida throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Akiyama has Machida pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Machida manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing. Machida has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Akiyama is trying to keep an underhook but Machida manages to get the takedown into half guard. Machida trying to control from half guard but Akiyama is working away. Akiyama wants to improve his position but Machida is controlling well.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Akiyama is looking for a sweep. Machida is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Akiyama is holding on to half guard well. Akiyama tries to roll over but Machida keeps him under control. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Akiyama makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
And that's the end of the fight! I would just about give that final round to Daichi Akiyama. Well Akiyama has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
