Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Maro Kartel! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Jayme Thales! The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Daniel Franklin and David Hoff.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Thales instigates a clinch. Thales taking a breather. Thales wants to break the clinch but can't.
Thales has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Kartel is trying to keep an underhook but Thales manages to get the takedown into half guard. Thales not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Thales is trying to control. Kartel wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Kartel is looking for a sweep. Thales is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Thales content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Thales looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Kartel with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Thales stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Kartel to get to his feet. Kartel shoots in and gets a takedown into Thales's guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kartel postures up.
Kartel working some strikes from top position. Kartel controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Kartel wants to control from the top but Thales keeps moving. Kartel being controlled here momentarily. Thales has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kartel can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Kartel accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Thales has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kartel postures up in Thales's guard and throws a big left but Thales blocks it. Kartel wants to control from the top but Thales keeps moving. Thales keeping full guard, as Kartel tries to pass. Thales keeping moving, preventing Kartel from controlling successfully. Kartel is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Thales is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Kartel stops Thales from standing up. We've been hearing good reports from Kartel's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Thales is trying to keep Kartel in close.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Thales drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Thales stands up. Thales throws a head kick that misses. Thales moves into the clinch. Kartel wants the takedown. Thales is fighting it off but Kartel persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Thales's guard against the cage. Kartel really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Kartel trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Kartel prevents Thales from getting back to his feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Thales is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Kartel defends well. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Thales trying to control the position.
Kartel stops Thales from standing up. Kartel trying to control but Thales is working from the bottom. Kartel with a flurry of punches that miss. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Kartel wants to control from the top but Thales keeps moving. Kartel cracks Thales with a solid left hand. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jayme Thales dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Kartel shoots in and drives through. Thales sprawls well. Thales looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Kartel! Thales is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Kartel is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Thales throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage. Thales is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position. Thales decides to stand back up. Thales instigates a clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. A quick uppercut on the inside from Thales. Thales is defending well against a takedown attempt. Kartel is trying to drag Thales to the mat but Thales just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Maro Kartel. That's going to take a lot out of him. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Thales has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Kartel is trying to keep an underhook but Thales manages to get the takedown into half guard. Thales passes to side control. Thales tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Thales has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Thales in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kartel dodges the ground and pound from Thales. Thales decides to stand back up. Thales scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Thales happy to just control the position for now. Thales wants to control but Kartel is keeping him busy. Kartel is looking to regain half guard here but Thales keeps moving and retains side control. Thales looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Thales controlling the position from side mount. Thales is looking to take a break and control but Kartel is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Kartel bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Kartel is looking to take this fight into the clinch. The fight moves into the clinch position. Thales successfully pulls guard.
Thales wants to get back to his feet but Kartel is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Thales working for a triangle but Kartel defends it easily.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Thales not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Jayme Thales showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!
Kartel tries to clinch but Thales moves out of range. Thales clinches. Thales has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Kartel uses from the top position. Thales keeping moving, preventing Kartel from controlling successfully. Jayme Thales has got the better of the ground game so far. Kartel keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Thales's head. Thales is looking to stand up but Kartel isn't so interested in that idea. Thales is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Kartel is aware though and is defending well. Thales is adopting a defensive guard. Thales keeping moving, preventing Kartel from controlling successfully.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kartel tries to free his leg and advance position but Thales is retaining full guard. Thales wants to control the position but Kartel says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard. Thales is trying to control but can't.

Thales is trying to get back to full guard. Kartel is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Thales is just riding it out for now. Kartel eventually gives up the hold. Kartel tries to pass to full mount but Thales defends it. Both fighters are breathing heavily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Thales is not content to let Kartel control the position. Thales trying to hold on to Kartel's head to control him but Kartel postures up.
Thales might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Kartel haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Thales gets full guard. Kartel trying to control the position from guard on top but Thales is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Thales is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Kartel presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat. A short body shot lands from Thales as the two fighters clinch.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Thales closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Kartel did well to prevent Thales getting side control. Kartel is looking for a sweep. Thales is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Thales seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Kartel is trying to maintain the position but Thales is very close to passing his half guard. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Kartel has hold of Thales's hands but Thales slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Thales takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Maro Kartel has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kartel is not content to let Thales control the position.
And that's the end of the fight! Jayme Thales comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. Well Thales has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
