0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Joaquim Cruz! The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Robert Douchet and Dillan Fox.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cruz changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Caldwell looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Cruz misses with the ground and pound. Caldwell is trying to control Cruz's posture but Cruz avoids it. Cruz tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Cruz goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Caldwell has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Cruz but great work by Caldwell. Cruz is trying to improve his position. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Cruz is trying to control Caldwell's posture but Caldwell avoids it. Caldwell is trying to get an arm triangle but Cruz is defending well. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Cruz tries to get back to half guard but can't.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cruz struggling a bit here. Cruz tries to bench press Caldwell off him but Caldwell keeps the position. Cruz regains half guard. Cruz is looking to improve his position.
Caldwell will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Caldwell tries to stand but can't do so whilst Cruz controls his leg. Cruz has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Caldwell is working away from the top position though. Cruz is looking to improve his position.
Caldwell wants to get back to his feet.
Cruz is trying to maintain the position but Caldwell is very close to passing his half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Caldwell seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Caldwell shoots in for a takedown but Cruz shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Cruz drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Caldwell prevents Cruz from improving position. Cruz tries to land with some ground and pound but misses. Cruz sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Caldwell is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Cruz lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face. Cruz is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Caldwell looks calm but he's in trouble here. Cruz gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Caldwell is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Cruz lets go of the hold and Caldwell can pop his arm back in it's socket.
