Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jordan Sonnen! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Valentin Hadjiev! The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Ryoma Takatsuka and Colin Fray.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hadjiev drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Sonnen looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Hadjiev with a nice head shot there. Sonnen looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Hadjiev throws a big elbow that misses. Hadjiev scoring with punches to the head and body. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Hadjiev accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Hadjiev with a nice head shot there. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Hadjiev chips away with some ground and pound. Hadjiev distracts Sonnen with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Hadjiev stands up over Sonnen, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Hadjiev must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Sonnen looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Hadjiev passes into half guard.
Hadjiev is pressing down on Sonnen's thigh, looking to free his foot. Sonnen is holding on for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sonnen wants to improve his position but Hadjiev is controlling well.
Hadjiev lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Hadjiev missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Nice strikes from Hadjiev there. Sonnen looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Hadjiev working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hadjiev uses his free foot to push down on Sonnen's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Sonnen. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Sonnen taking shots to the head. Hadjiev raining down hammerfists from mount. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Sonnen is looking to improve his position but Hadjiev isn't that keen on the idea. Sonnen is rocked! The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sonnen working to try and regain half guard.
Sonnen is breathing heavily. The referee warns Sonnen that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Oh Sonnen is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Oooooh, big shot lands for Hadjiev! Sonnen is hurt baaadly! Hadjiev is firing away with more strikes - Sonnen is covering up... the ref is warning him to do something. He's just covering up though still and the ref has to step in to end the fight! This one is all over!
