PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Phil Laak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jesse Pinkman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pinkman has chosen On the Rag as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Phil Laak!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jesse Pinkman!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Steve Smith and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Laak scores with a leg kick.
Laak slips a straight right by Pinkman.
Pinkman throws a looping overhand right but Laak ducks down to avoid it.
Laak looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Jab from Pinkman.
Laak takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Laak!
Jesse Pinkman seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pinkman has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Laak finds it's way round the side to connect with Pinkman's head.
Laak cracks Pinkman with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Laak misses with an uppercut
and Pinkman connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Pinkman blocks the body kick.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Pinkman has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

Laak moves out of range of the strikes.
Pinkman misses with a double jab
and Laak counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
Pinkman throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Laak tries a head kick but it misses.
Pinkman throws a right and a left that both miss.

Laak tries to land a leg kick but Pinkman saw it coming and moves away.
Laak changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Pinkman tries to avoid it but Laak manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Pinkman to the ground. Pinkman escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Laak throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Pinkman sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Laak gets caught napping as Pinkman dives in and scores a takedown. Laak manages to retain guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Pinkman wants to control from the top but Laak keeps moving.
Laak pulls Pinkman in close to prevent any damage.

Pinkman passes Laak's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Pinkman seems to be looking for submissions.

Pinkman is trying to control. Laak wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Pinkman is looking to advance position but Laak won't allow it.

Pinkman looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Laak tries to get to full guard but Pinkman has control of the leg.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The fighters are battling for position here. Laak manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Pinkman drops back, looking for a kneebar! Laak looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Laak looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Laak!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Phil Laak will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Laak drops his hands momentarily and Pinkman takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Pinkman swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Pinkman checks a leg kick.
Pinkman fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Laak avoids it really well and circles away.
A combination from Pinkman does no damage.
Pinkman throws a right and a left that both miss.
A jab from Laak does it's job there.
Jesse Pinkman is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Pinkman lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.

The fight stays on the outside here - Laak looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Laak doesn't manage to clinch there - Pinkman circles away.

Laak takes a swing at Pinkman's ribcage but misses.
Laak displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Pinkman throws out the jab.

and Laak counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.
Pinkman might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Pinkman throws a hook to the side of Laak's head but Laak sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Laak uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Pinkman.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Laak tries to land a front kick but Pinkman steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Pinkman throws a jab when Laak was well out of range.

Laak feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Pinkman's calf.
Pinkman looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Laak is looking to wear down Pinkman with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.

Laak with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Pinkman to score with a decent uppercut.

Laak tries to close the distance and clinch up but Pinkman swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Laak throws a body kick that misses.
Pinkman tries to bum rush Laak with a series of wild strikes but Laak uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Laak takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Laak cracks Pinkman with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Pinkman moves out of range as Laak throws a body kick.
Laak scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Pinkman doesn't seem bothered though.
Laak lands a jab to the nose.
Laak throws a leg kick but Pinkman sees it coming and moves out of range.
Pinkman changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Laak tries to avoid it but Pinkman manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Laak to the ground. Laak escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Laak slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.

Laak misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Laak ducks under a wild hook from Pinkman.
Laak swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Pinkman.
Laak swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Pinkman avoids the body shot from Laak.
The fighters circling - Pinkman throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Pinkman misses with a right hand
and Laak counters with a solid body kick.
Pinkman lands a jab.
Pinkman has developed a nice purple lump on his ribcage, as a result of some heavy body kicks from Laak.

Pinkman tries to keep at a distance but Laak has taken the fight into the clinch.
Laak lands with a light punch inside.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Laak.


It looks like Jesse Pinkman has been cut.

Laak landing knees to the body.

Pinkman takes an elbow to the temple.

Laak breaks the clinch.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Pinkman shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Laak's guard.
Laak wants to sweep here but Pinkman controlling him for the moment.

And that's the end of the fight!
Phil Laak showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Laak, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
