3 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rajesh Koothrappali! The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Alexandre Firmino and Daniel Cesar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Koothrappali leaves Clare with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Clare tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Koothrappali defends well and Clare ends up having to push Koothrappali into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Clare is looking for a takedown. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dustin Clare. That's going to take a lot out of him. Clare has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Koothrappali is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. Koothrappali is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. Koothrappali drops down looking for an ankle pick but Clare pulls his leg out and moves away.
Horrible takedown by Koothrappali or perhaps it was just good defense by Clare which made him look bad. Let's see what he can do from the top position. Koothrappali drops back, looking for a kneebar! Clare looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Clare looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Clare! Clare looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
That's one minute gone in the round. Koothrappali manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Koothrappali is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Clare's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Clare's back! Clare is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Clare wants to control his opponent's hands but Koothrappali gets his hands free. Clare tries to roll but Koothrappali sticks to his back.
Clare is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at Academia Ipanema, so we'll see if he gets out of it. Koothrappali working for the choke. Koothrappali is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Clare defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined. Koothrappali controlling well, preventing Clare from escaping the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Koothrappali working for a choke but Clare is defending well. Koothrappali has got his arm under Clare's chin working for the choke… has he got it? It looks pretty tight! Oh! Clare has spun round into Koothrappali's guard beautifully! Well done that man!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Clare forces his way into half guard. Clare is looking for a kimura but Koothrappali is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Clare to get the leverage. Clare wants to work for an arm triangle but Koothrappali is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Koothrappali looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Koothrappali is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Koothrappali looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Koothrappali's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Clare. Koothrappali keeping moving, preventing Clare from controlling successfully. Clare trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Koothrappali throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Clare stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Koothrappali swivels though and keeps the full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Koothrappali throws his legs up looking for a submission but Clare uses it to pass to side control.
Clare tries for a kimura but Koothrappali is defending well. Clare is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Koothrappali has escaped the position, nice work there. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Koothrappali is looking to regain half guard here but Clare keeps moving and retains side control. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Koothrappali gets back to half guard. Koothrappali wants to get back to full guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Rajesh Koothrappali will probably get the nod. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Clare stuffs the takedown attempt from Koothrappali. Koothrappali gets slowly back to his feet. Rajesh Koothrappali seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Koothrappali fails with the takedown and Clare decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Koothrappali's guard. Koothrappali is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Clare rolls with it to try and escape but Koothrappali cranks on the arm and Clare is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
