PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Vernon Mcfarland (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Victor Martin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Victor Martin told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Vernon Mcfarland!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Victor Martin!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mcfarland is trying hard to land a takedown here. Martin sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Mcfarland shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Martin but Martin pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Martin closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Mcfarland fails to pull the fight into his guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Vernon Mcfarland. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mcfarland jumps guard but Martin turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Mcfarland is fighting off a takedown attempt but Martin is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Mcfarland to the mat. Mcfarland regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Martin wants to stand but Mcfarland has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Martin is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Mcfarland looking to score a takedown here. Martin is defending well but Mcfarland drives through and ends up in Martin's guard.

Mcfarland gets to his feet. Martin looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Martin bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Mcfarland pushes Martin away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Martin gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Martin thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Martin advances to mount.

Martin goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Mcfarland turns into him and now he's in Martin's guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Mcfarland wants to stand and escape but instead Martin has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Martin's corner is telling him to maintain position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Martin seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Martin works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Mcfarland is breathing heavily.
Martin trying to mount his opponent but Mcfarland defends it.
Martin passes to side control.

Martin is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Mcfarland is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Martin passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Mcfarland!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Martin content just to control the position here.
Martin's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Martin closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Mcfarland's guard.
Martin is stalling in the full guard.
Martin works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Mcfarland is trying to stand up here but Martin is controlling him well.
Mcfarland won't allow Martin to pass to mount.
Martin wants to stand but Mcfarland has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Martin is figuring out what he wants to do next.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Victor Martin has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Mcfarland shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Martin shoots in for a double leg but Mcfarland sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Martin pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Mcfarland has his takedown stuffed

and Martin counters by moving into the clinch.

Martin turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

Martin cracks Mcfarland with a big right hand but Mcfarland just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Martin tries to get to his feet but Mcfarland is in the middle of advancing position himself and ends up with Martin in his guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Martin wants to get up but he can't break Mcfarland's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Martin lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Martin working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.

Martin is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Martin pushing down on Mcfarland's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.

Martin is trying to work for a kimura but Mcfarland is defending well.
Martin takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Martin tries to stand and escape but Mcfarland is controlling the position.
Martin throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Martin is pressing down on Mcfarland's thigh, looking to free his foot. Mcfarland is holding on for now.
Martin stalling.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Martin throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Victor Martin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!



Martin rushes Mcfarland and presses him up against the cage.

Mcfarland has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Martin is trying to keep an underhook but Mcfarland manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Martin has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mcfarland is working away from the top position though.

Mcfarland is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Martin is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Mcfarland not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Mcfarland is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Martin has managed to free his arm - good work.
Victor Martin has got the better of the ground game so far.

Mcfarland is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Martin desperately trying to maintain half guard.
Martin makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Martin.
Martin has control of Mcfarland's left arm, preventing Mcfarland from doing any damage.

Martin is looking for a triangle but Mcfarland pushes his legs off easily.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Martin can do anything to dispel that myth.

Mcfarland is sitting in close to Martin's body. Martin has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Mcfarland is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Mcfarland is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Martin.
