1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Joaquim Cruz! The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Alec Ball and Yves DeLean.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cruz closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Valencia did well to prevent Cruz getting side control. Cruz is trying to work for a kimura but Valencia is defending well.
Valencia really is a fat lump. Cruz wants to pass the guard but Valencia is defending well. Cruz seems to be looking for submissions.
Valencia is trying to maintain the position but Cruz is very close to passing his half guard. Valencia is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control. Valencia might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Cruz looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Cruz stops Valencia from getting back to his feet.
Cruz is looking to take a break and control but Valencia is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Cruz is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Cruz tries to advance to mount but Valencia denies him. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Cruz wants to lay and pray for a moment but Valencia keeps working. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. You can see the frustration on Valencia's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Cruz drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Valencia gets the underhooks and prevents it.

He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it. Cruz is not content to let Valencia control the position. Valencia trying to control but Cruz is working from the bottom. Cruz tries to land a sweep but no joy. Valencia has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Valencia working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Cruz's head. Cruz escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Valencia gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Valencia content to stall in guard here.

Valencia is aware though and is defending well. Cruz looking for a sweep. Not yet Cruz, not yet. Cruz keeping moving, preventing Valencia from controlling successfully. Cruz had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Valencia defends it easily. Valencia controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Joaquim Cruz has got the better of the ground game so far.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Valencia has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. Cruz manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Valencia manages to get himself to full guard.

Valencia tightens his grip and picks Cruz up, before dumping him to the ground. Cruz manages to land in guard. Valencia wants to control from the top but Cruz keeps moving. Cruz trying to control the position.
Valencia passes into half guard. Cruz tries to roll over but Valencia keeps him under control. Valencia is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Valencia passes Cruz's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Cruz is trying to maintain the position but Valencia is very close to passing his half guard. Cruz takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Cruz tries to roll over but Valencia keeps him under control. Valencia is looking to take a break and control but Cruz is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Valencia looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Cruz with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Cruz wants to get back to full guard but Valencia has passed into side control. Cruz is looking to reverse the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Valencia working the ground and pound from side control. Valencia trying to control the position but Cruz is working away. Valencia tries for a kimura but Cruz is defending well. Valencia advances nicely into full mount. Cruz can't escape the position.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Cruz looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back! Cruz defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Valencia's arms. Valencia looking to break Cruz's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Cruz remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Valencia will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Cruz is trying to break free.
Valencia has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Cruz has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Cruz tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell! Cruz manages to regain half guard. Good work. Cruz has hold of Valencia's hands but Valencia slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Cruz wants to get back to full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Cruz works his way to full guard. Good work. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Cruz has an active guard here but Valencia has managed to pass into half guard.
Cruz looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Cruz wants to get back to full guard but Valencia has mounted him! Cruz wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back. Valencia has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Cruz's body.
Cruz is really stuck here.
