The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kong throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Petrenko. Kong misses with a wild combination.
No joy there for Kong, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Benoit Kong seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Kong cracks Petrenko with an open hand slap.

Petrenko throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Kong's waist but Kong gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Petrenko off to one side. Kong throws a nice looking combination but Petrenko bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. A punch combination from Kong misses. Kong misses with the combination.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kong throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Petrenko. Kong throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Kong is breathing heavily. Petrenko shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Kong as he jumps to the side.

Kong must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Petrenko is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Petrenko Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Kong's back instead. Kong manages to reverse the position and now he's in Petrenko's guard. Nice work there by Kong.

Kong is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Petrenko seems to be working for a kimura but Kong defends the submission attempt. Kong kicks off Petrenko and gets to his feet. Petrenko takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.

Kong with a lazy takedown attempt and Petrenko counters with a left and a right that stings Kong. Kong blocks a head kick by Petrenko.

He has the arm isolated but Kong is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Petrenko tries for a kimura but Kong is defending well. Kong sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Petrenko trying to work for an americana but Kong has managed to regain full guard.
Petrenko postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Kong is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Petrenko, into his guard. Petrenko can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Kong controls the pace.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kong wants to pass the guard but Petrenko is keeping the position. Petrenko escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kong gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Kong sitting in guard, not really doing much. Petrenko working for a triangle but Kong defends it easily.
Kong stays in close to Petrenko's body and controls the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kong wants to stand but Petrenko has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Petrenko escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kong gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Kong decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Petrenko, up you get! Kong falls off balance throwing a combination
and Petrenko counters with a nice double leg into guard. Petrenko forces his way into half guard. Petrenko tries to pass to full mount but Kong defends it. Benoit Kong is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Kong wants to control but Petrenko is keeping busy and won't allow it. Petrenko works his foot free and advances to mount. Kong is desperately trying to improve his position but Petrenko has a good base and remains in mount. Kong wants to try and get back to his feet. Kong wants to control but Petrenko is having none of it. Uri Petrenko has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Kong is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Petrenko is staying active.
