PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rez Cortez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and You Down (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cortez comes into the arena with Hit Me Baby One More Time by Britney Spears blaring out of the sound system. Down has chosen st. anger as his entrance music. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, You Down!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Ryoma Takatsuka and Jeff Smith.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Both fighters are only really looking to counter, so after a good 30 seconds of circling eachother endlessly, the referee has stepped in and told them both to be more aggressive.
Cortez bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Down's head backwards.
Down fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Down. Cortez shrugs it off though.
Down shoots for a takedown but Cortez saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Cortez seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cortez looks to land a right hand but Down moved out of range.
Down staying out of range there.
Down swings away with a body shot that misses
and Cortez counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Down has a takedown stuffed.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Down misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Rez Cortez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of You Down.
Cortez sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.

Down takes one on the button.

It looks like You Down has been cut.
A big right from Cortez misses.
Cortez misses with a straight right.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Down fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Cortez to the ground. Down is now in Cortez's guard.
Cortez wants to stand but Down is controlling the position.
Cortez knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Down on the ground.
Down trying to control but Cortez is working from the bottom.

Down is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Down trying to control the position from guard on top but Cortez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Down drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Down jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Down wants to pass the guard but Cortez is keeping the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

You Down dominated that round.
The cut man is working on You Down's cut.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Nice takedown defense from Cortez. No joy for Down on that attempt.
Down dives in for a single leg takedown but Cortez sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Down breaks from the clinch.
Cortez throws a jab when Down was well out of range.
Nice cross by Cortez.

Down displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Cortez throws out the jab.
Cortez misses with an uppercut

so Down counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Down forces his way into half guard.
Cortez is not content to let Down control the position.
Cortez has his hands clasped together around Down's back. He's all about the action.
Down works his foot free and advances to mount.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Down wants to finish this one by submission but Cortez is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Down.

Cortez defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Down.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Cortez tries to lock up and control but Down gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Down sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Cortez is trying to escape the mount.

Down goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Cortez is on top in guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cortez trying to control the position from guard on top but Down is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Down is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Cortez defends well.
Down is trying to keep Cortez in close.

Down scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Cortez misses the shot to the body.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Down ducks under a wild hook from Cortez.
Cortez gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Down.
Cortez throws an ugly left hook that misses

and Down counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Cortez's guard now.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Down drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Cortez dives on top into guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Cortez avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

You Down showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on You Down's cut.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. And we move into the final round!

Down dives in and grabs Cortez's left leg, looking for a takedown. Cortez pushes down on Down's head and hops out.
You Down is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cortez bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Down blocks a jab.
Down changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Cortez tries to avoid it but Down manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Cortez to the ground. Cortez escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Down avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Cortez misses with a right hand

and Down counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Down.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Down stands and throws Cortez's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Down swings around for an armbar but Cortez sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Down's guard.
Down has his hands on Cortez's head, controlling the position.

Down is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Down is looking for a triangle but Cortez pushes his legs off easily.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Down controls Cortez momentarily but Cortez frees himself.
Down might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Cortez haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Down working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Cortez doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Cortez manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Down has a closed guard, preventing Cortez from standing up.
Cortez has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Down looking for a guillotine here but Cortez defends easily.
Cortez wants to control from the top but Down keeps moving.
Cortez is really struggling to control Down but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Cortez is looking to work some ground and pound but Down has wrist control.
Down is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Cortez stops Down from standing up.

Down is looking for a triangle but Cortez pushes his legs off easily.
Down preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Down is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Cortez is looking to control Down's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Cortez avoid being mounted?
Cortez flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Down looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Down is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cortez wants to control but Down is keeping busy.
