PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kantaro Soji (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hikaru Ichigono (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kantaro Soji!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Hikaru Ichigono!
The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Soji keeps the fight on the outside.
Soji looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
Ichigono throws a head kick but Soji moves out of range.
Ichigono shoots in but no luck this time.
Soji gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Ichigono counters by clinching up.
Soji can't get the takedown.

Ichigono drags the fight down to the ground.

Ichigono uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Ichigono misses with a wild combination.

Ichigono clinches up with Soji and pushes him back against the cage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
A left hand lands to the body for Ichigono.

Ichigono breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Ichigono gets a takedown into half guard.
Ichigono tries to pass the half guard into mount. Soji knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Ichigono wants to stand up but Soji has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Soji on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Soji tries to get out of the position.
Ichigono thows a huge punch but Soji dodges it nicely.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ichigono frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Ichigono thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

Ichigono working for a guillotine from mount but Soji is in no mood to give up.
Ichigono tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Ichigono working for a submission but Soji is keeping him at bay.
Soji wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hikaru Ichigono dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Soji uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Ichigono.
Ichigono shoots and misses

and Soji counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Ichigono's guard now.

Ichigono looking for a sweep. Not yet Ichigono, not yet.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Ichigono working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Soji doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Soji manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Let's hope that Ichigono has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Ichigono looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Ichigono is pulling down on Soji's head to control his posture.
Ichigono wants to stand but Soji is controlling the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Soji tries to stand but Ichigono is controlling from the bottom.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Ichigono holds on and takes a little breather.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Ichigono lands a good elbow from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Kantaro Soji will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Ichigono has managed to clinch.
Soji is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Ichigono gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Ichigono gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Well, if Ichigono is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Ichigono tries to stand but can't do so whilst Soji controls his leg.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ichigono with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Ichigono thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Soji's head.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Ichigono is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Ichigono is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Soji!

Ichigono looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Ichigono looking to control and managing it successfully.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Despite being in the dominant position, Hikaru Ichigono just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Ichigono drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ichigono is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Ichigono passes Soji's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Soji tries to kick Ichigono off but Ichigono keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Hikaru Ichigono comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Ichigono has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
