Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Douglas Ratliff! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Martin Novak! The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Ron Honeybunn and Steve Erwin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Novak misses with a double jab
enabling Ratliff to counter with a crisp jab. Novak has taken the fight to the clinch.
Novak breaks from the clinch.
A punch combination from Novak misses. Novak misses with a combination
and Ratliff counters with a shoot takedown. Novak fights it but they end up in guard. Novak bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Ratliff's guard. Novak won't allow Ratliff to sweep him here. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Novak accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Novak postures up.
Novak trying to control the position from guard on top but Ratliff is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Novak wanted to stand there but Ratliff had control of the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ratliff preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Novak content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Novak preventing the sweep. Novak trying to control but Ratliff is working from the bottom. Ratliff looking for a sweep. Not yet Ratliff, not yet. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Ratliff is trying to keep Novak in close.
Novak works a leg free and moves into half guard. Ratliff really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Novak trying to control the action but Ratliff is working from the bottom. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Novak lands a nice short elbow. Novak thows a huge punch but Ratliff dodges it nicely.
Ratliff avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Novak. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Novak is looking to take a break and control but Ratliff is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Ratliff wants to control but Novak is keeping busy.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ratliff is looking for a sweep. Novak is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Novak lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. This has been an exciting period of action! Ratliff trying to control here.
Novak is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Ratliff is rocked! Novak looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Ratliff with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Oh Ratliff is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Novak lands a big elbow from half guard. That looks like it's hurt Ratliff quite badly. Ratliff pulls Novak in close trying to recover. Novak postures up and lands two really hard shots that put Ratliff on queer street! The ref takes a look and decides to call an end to the fight! Possibly an early stoppage but Ratliff doesn't seem to be complaining too much.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:46 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Martin Novak!
