Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Oscar Avila (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johny Rico (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Rico's choice of entrance music: Bolt Thrower - The IVth Crusade . There are an array of beautiful celebrities at ringside tonight! I wonder if any of them paid for their tickets.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of

1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Johny Rico! The judges for this bout are Santiago Holmes, Bart Greer and David Hoff.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nice takedown defense from Rico. No joy for Avila on that attempt. Rico swats away the attempt to clinch by Avila. Avila moves into the clinch. Avila trying to stall but Rico improves his position.

Rico closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Rico is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Avila desperately trying to maintain half guard. Avila wants to control but Rico is keeping busy.

Avila will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Avila trying to control but Rico is working from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Rico is trying to get back to full guard. We've been hearing good reports from Avila's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Rico gets back to full guard.

Avila gets caught flat footed, as Rico shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Rico must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Avila keeping moving, preventing Rico from controlling successfully. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Avila looking to hit a scissor sweep but Rico is one step ahead there. Avila striking off his back but it's not causing Rico any problems. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Rico trying to control but Avila is working from the bottom. Rico should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Avila clinches. Avila jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Rico walks away with a smile on his face. Avila gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Avila shoots in for a takedown but Rico shows good takedown defense. No joy there for Avila, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Rico lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise. Avila blocks a head kick by Rico.
Avila tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Oscar Avila seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Rico swats away the attempt to clinch by Avila. Rico controlling from the top position. We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Rico has eaten all the pies!

OK we're going to have a standup here. Johny Rico hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Avila is looking to clinch but Rico is avoiding it.
Avila throws an overhand right that lands on Rico's shoulder, as Rico tries to avoid the shot. Avila lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Rico backs up against the cage.

Rico takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Rico tries to pass the half guard into mount. Rico stands up from Avila's guard - Rico perhaps looking for a knockout. Rico closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Avila quickly recovers to half guard. Rico is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Avila! Rico prevents Avila from getting the reversal. Rico misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Rico takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
