4 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Flavio Diaz! The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Paulo Santos and Alexandre Firmino.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Smith thows a body shot but no joy. Smith rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Diaz moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Smith looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Diaz closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Smith to the mat! Smith manages to get full guard. Smith can't keep his opponent in guard - Diaz advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Diaz is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Smith defends it well. Smith desperately trying to maintain half guard. Smith regains full guard. Nicely done. Diaz tries to free his leg and advance position but Smith is retaining full guard. Diaz is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Diaz wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving. Diaz avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Diaz drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Smith dives on top into guard. Smith has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Diaz is proving hard to escape from. Diaz keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smith missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Diaz escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smith gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Diaz keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully. Diaz bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Smith's guard. Diaz is in close to Smith's body, working some short punches and elbows. Diaz avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Diaz trying to control but Smith is working from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Smith is looking for a triangle but Diaz pushes his legs off easily.
Diaz is looking to work some ground and pound but Smith has wrist control. Diaz tries to free his leg and advance position but Smith is retaining full guard. Diaz trying to control but Smith is working from the bottom. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Flavio Diaz will probably get the nod. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Smith sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Diaz's guard. Diaz is looking for a sweep. Smith is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Diaz keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Smith moves nicely into side control. Diaz tries to improve position but can't. Smith lands an elbow. Smith has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Diaz is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Smith yanks on the arm and Diaz is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Smith.
