Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
14 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jim Beckett! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
10 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jimmer Octopulus! The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Kenichi Hosakawa and Tatsuya Matsuyama.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A jab from Octopulus misses. Octopulus slips a jab from Beckett. Beckett looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. Octopulus connects with a single shot there. A solid leg kick lands there for Beckett.
Octopulus is looking to land body kicks. Octopulus moves out of range of the body kick. Octopulus lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise. Octopulus looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.

Beckett throws an off balance right hand
and Octopulus counters with a straight right hand. Beckett pivots, looking for a leg kick but Octopulus is out of range and Beckett settles back down. Beckett thows a body shot but no joy. Octopulus chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Beckett can pounce on him.
Beckett throws a head kick that misses. Octopulus ducks under a wild hook from Beckett. Beckett throws a chopping leg kick but Octopulus manages to avoid taking any serious damage. Octopulus feints a jab promting Beckett to slip. Octopulus then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Beckett slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
That's one minute gone in the round. Octopulus walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Beckett checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side. Beckett will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Octopulus has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Beckett slips a straight right by Octopulus. Octopulus checks a leg kick. Octopulus wants to slow Beckett down by chopping away at his legs. Beckett looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Octopulus is fending him off so far but Beckett persists. Nope, Octopulus circles away and we're back to standing. Beckett misses with a low kick. Octopulus misses with a low kick.
Beckett throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Octopulus sees it coming and avoids it easily. Beckett throws a leg kick enabling Octopulus to counter with a crisp jab. Octopulus misses with an attempted mid kick.

Beckett shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Octopulus counters with a stiff right hand. Ouch! a nice leg kick from Octopulus, right into the meat.
A looping hook to the body misses from Octopulus. Beckett does a little dance to reset his feet. Beckett blocks a leg kick. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Beckett misses with a looping left. Octopulus throws a body punch but Beckett moves out of range. and Octopulus counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena. Beckett doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Jab from Beckett. Beckett shoots in looking for a takedown. Octopulus tries to sprawl out of it but Beckett keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the ropes. Octopulus manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jim Beckett. That's going to take a lot out of him. Beckett turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick. Octopulus takes a kick to the body and keeps moving. Beckett shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Octopulus is trying to defend but Beckett finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Octopulus is trying to maintain the position but Beckett is very close to passing his half guard. Octopulus regains full guard. Nicely done. Beckett postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Beckett slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Beckett postures up in Octopulus's guard and throws a big left but Octopulus blocks it. Beckett throwing strikes but missing. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Beckett throws a big elbow that misses. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Octopulus looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

That was a close round but I would say that Jim Beckett will probably get the nod. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Octopulus shoots in for a takedown but Beckett shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Octopulus takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it. Octopulus takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

A head kick misses from Beckett. Octopulus shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Beckett but Beckett pushes him off and we're back to square one. Beckett scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Beckett throws a half hearted mid kick. Beckett moves out of range of the leg kick from Octopulus. Octopulus has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Octopulus there as he acknowledges the shot. Octopulus uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Beckett.

This has been an exciting period of action! Octopulus throws a hook but Beckett avoids it easily. Beckett scores with a slapping inside leg kick. Beckett shoots in looking for a takedown but Octopulus manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Beckett's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Octopulus moves into range and lands a nice leg kick. Beckett wants to land a leg kick but Octopulus is out of range. Beckett ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Octopulus moves away. Beckett ducks under a wild hook from Octopulus. Beckett misses with a low kick as Octopulus jumps back. Beckett looks to land a right hand but Octopulus moved out of range. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Octopulus takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness. Octopulus throws the left hand but Beckett avoids the punch easily. Beckett throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that Jim Beckett will probably get the nod. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.
Nice cross by Octopulus. Octopulus throws an overhand right that lands on Beckett's shoulder, as Beckett tries to avoid the shot. Octopulus blocks a leg kick. Octopulus throws a hook to the side of Beckett's head but Beckett sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Beckett lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Octopulus has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Octopulus and we're back underway with a touch of gloves. Octopulus lands an overhand right. Beckett buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

and Beckett counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Octopulus's guard now. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Beckett looking to sit in guard and control but Octopulus gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Octopulus trying to control but Beckett is working from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Octopulus working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Octopulus accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Octopulus makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Beckett trying to control the position.

Beckett is really struggling to control Octopulus but he's trying to hold on to the position. Octopulus trying to control the position from guard on top but Beckett is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Octopulus is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Octopulus with a flurry of punches that miss. Beckett keeping moving, preventing Octopulus from controlling successfully. Jimmer Octopulus has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Jim Beckett overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Octopulus looking to pass the guard. Octopulus throws an elbow that misses. Beckett uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Octopulus's guard. Nice move by Beckett! Octopulus working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Beckett. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Octopulus has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Beckett has passed into side control.
Beckett is trying to get an arm triangle but Octopulus is defending well. Beckett advances to full mount.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Beckett sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it! Beckett raining down hammerfists from mount. Octopulus really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. BOOM! Beckett connects with a massive shot to the dome!

And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jim Beckett. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Beckett, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent.
