PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Brian Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Michael Galustyan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 8 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Brian Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 7 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Michael Galustyan!
The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Igor Prikhodko and Aleksandr Martynov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jones moves into the clinch.
Galustyan drops down looking for an ankle pick but Jones pulls his leg out and moves away.
Jones throws a looping overhand right but Galustyan ducks down to avoid it.

Jones rushes Galustyan and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Galustyan decides to pull guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Galustyan utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Galustyan working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Jones.
Galustyan is looking to stand up but Jones isn't so interested in that idea.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Jones accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Jones is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Galustyan can do anything to dispel that myth.

Jones gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Jones misses with the combination.
Jones keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Jones misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Galustyan.
Jones tries to clinch up but Galustyan circles away and keeps his distance.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Galustyan.

Galustyan gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.

Jones is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Jones wants to get back to his feet but Galustyan is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Jones working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Galustyan doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Galustyan manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Jones wants to sweep but no luck.

Jones is looking for a triangle but Galustyan pushes his legs off easily.

Galustyan really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jones. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Jones is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Galustyan postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Galustyan stops Jones from standing up.
Galustyan landing with the ground and pound.
Galustyan is looking to work some ground and pound but Jones has wrist control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Galustyan got a little sloppy there for a moment and Jones has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Galustyan has managed to get both his arms back between Jones's legs - danger averted.
Galustyan throws a strike but Jones rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Brian Jones will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Jones lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Galustyan circles away quickly and effectively.
Jones wants to clinch.
Brian Jones is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jones looks to land a combination but Galustyan avoids it well.
Brian Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Galustyan shoots in looking for a takedown but Jones manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Galustyan's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Jones lands a jab to the head.

Jones throws a series of punches but Galustyan moves out of range.
Galustyan showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Jones.
Galustyan dives in and grabs Jones's left leg, looking for a takedown. Jones pushes down on Galustyan's head and hops out.
Jones pivots, looking for a leg kick but Galustyan is out of range and Jones settles back down.
Jones fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Jones wants to clinch but Galustyan slips to the side

and Galustyan holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Galustyan tries for a takedown. No joy.
Brian Jones has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Michael Galustyan.
Galustyan has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Jones avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Jones goes for a takedown in the clinch but Galustyan prevents it.
I was talking to Jones's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.

Jones has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Galustyan regains guard immediately.

Galustyan pushes Jones off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Jones shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Galustyan sprawls well. Galustyan wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Jones gets slowly back to his feet.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Galustyan bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Jones misses with a jab, cross combination.
Jones shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Galustyan defends it nicely.
Horrible takedown by Galustyan or perhaps it was just good defense by Jones which made him look bad.

Galustyan tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Jones swivels and escapes.
Jones throws a right and a left that Galustyan avoids nicely.

Jones changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Galustyan looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Galustyan is not content to let Jones control the position.
Galustyan is trying to improve his position.
Galustyan tries to escape but Jones is in control.
Jones misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Jones is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Galustyan knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Jones is looking to take a break and control but Galustyan is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Galustyan is looking to reverse the position.
Galustyan is not content to let Jones control the position.
Jones in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Jones wants to control but Galustyan is keeping him busy.

Jones is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Galustyan is trying to escape and Jones transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Galustyan is forced to tap! Nice work there by Jones! Very nice indeed!
