PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Renato Otis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kia Turunen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Turunen has chosen Requiem for a Dream as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Renato Otis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Kia Turunen!
The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Ben Zyskovitsi and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Otis circles away from the clinch attempt

and Otis decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Turunen's guard.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Otis is working Turunen over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Otis wants to pass the guard but Turunen is keeping the position.
Otis has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Otis looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Turunen not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Otis stays in close to Turunen's body and controls the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Renato Otis wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Otis shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Turunen is in trouble now - Otis has advanced to mount!
Otis lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Otis lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Otis swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Turunen is now in Otis's guard. A big mistake from Otis there, giving up the dominant position!

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Turunen wants to control from the top but Otis keeps moving.
Otis is pulling down on Turunen's head to control his posture.

Otis looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Turunen looking to sit in guard and control but Otis gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Otis slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Otis wants to control from the top but Turunen keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Otis is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Renato Otis.

Turunen gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Otis to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Turunen is trying to keep Otis in close.

Otis postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Turunen is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Otis, into his guard.
Otis keeping moving, preventing Turunen from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Otis gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Otis has clasped his hands together around Turunen's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Turunen tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Otis wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
A lull in the action here.
Otis throws a strike aimed at the side of Turunen's head but Turunen avoids it well.
Renato Otis overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Otis is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Turunen's shoulder. That is not cool.
Turunen is looking to regain half guard here but Otis keeps moving and retains side control.

Otis is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Turunen has escaped the position, nice work there.
Otis wants to stand but Turunen is controlling his arm.

Otis is trying to get an arm triangle but Turunen is defending well.
Otis is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Turunen will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Turunen takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Turunen is looking to regain half guard here but Otis keeps moving and retains side control.
Otis wants to stand but Turunen has his arm trapped.
Otis is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Otis seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Turunen for as long as he can get away with.

We've been hearing good reports from Otis's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Otis creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Turunen sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Otis wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Turunen, who protects the arm well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Otis's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Otis displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Turunen.
Turunen shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Otis sprawls well. Otis wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Turunen gets slowly back to his feet.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Otis is working Turunen over with some ground and pound from side control.
Turunen struggling a bit here.
Otis landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
Turunen tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Turunen keeps trying to improve his position.

Otis tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Otis has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Otis is working to tighten his grip on Turunen's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Turunen has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Otis is really squeezing tight and eventually Turunen passes out! Otis breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!
