PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sal Governale (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bokya Kersikov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kersikov is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Get Back - Ludacris. Bokya Kersikov told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Sal Governale!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Bokya Kersikov!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, William Gold and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Governale swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
We've been hearing reports that Governale has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Governale checks the leg kick.
Governale shoots in but Kersikov avoids the takedown attempt easily.

and Kersikov counters with a single leg into guard. Governale didn't expect that.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Kersikov throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Governale was covering up waiting for the punch and Kersikov finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Governale missing with a left hand there. Kersikov was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

Kersikov has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Governale is landing a low percentage of strikes.

and Governale counters with a nice double leg into side control. Kersikov won't be happy with that.
Kersikov is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Governale off and has taken his back!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Governale tries to escape but Kersikov has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
Watch the back of the head! Comes the shout from the referee towards Kersikov.

and Kersikov counters with a shoot takedown. Governale fights it but they end up in guard.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Governale pulls Kersikov in close to prevent any damage.
Kersikov postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Kersikov trying to control the position from guard on top but Governale is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Governale is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Governale feints and then cracks Kersikov's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Kersikov down.
Kersikov connects with a leg kick. Governale looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.

Nice straight punches there by Governale. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Governale.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Governale is defended easily by Kersikov.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Governale crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Kersikov - the referee stops the clock and Governale gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Kersikov. Governale manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Bokya Kersikov showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Kersikov seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Governale does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Governale's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Governale will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Governale closes this distance looking for a takedown but Kersikov circles away.
Bokya Kersikov is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Well Kersikov has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
