The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Arvi Lind and Tarja Halkonen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alston tries to clinch up.
Alston tries to close the distance and clinch but Maia swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Maia misses with a right hand
and Alston moves into the clinch.
Alston gets control of Maia's arms and successfully pulls guard. Alston will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Maia advances to half guard.
Maia keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Maia is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Alston sees it coming and defends easily.
Alston knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Maia on the ground.
Maia in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Alston tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Maia!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:45 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Demian Maia!
After the fight, Demian Maia was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
