Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Johnny Smith! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Mark Webber! The judges for this bout are Peter Branson, Daniel Franklin and Dirk Anderson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Smith wants to clinch. Smith wants to clinch but Webber slips to the side and Webber counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work. Smith fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Smith lands a big head kick that sends Webber tumbling to the mat! Smith takes a step backwards and waves Webber back to his feet - he wants the finish!
It looks like Mark Webber has been cut. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Smith blocks a leg kick. Johnny Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Smith closes the distance but Webber moves to the side and Webber counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Webber. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. Webber's corner is telling him to maintain position. Webber drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Webber jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Webber throwing strikes but missing. Webber postures up.
Webber makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Webber works over Smith with some ground and pound from guard. Webber stays in close to Smith's body and controls the position. Webber connects with a couple of short punches.
That's one minute gone in the round. Webber postures up and lands a big shot to Smith's brow. Webber is looking to work some ground and pound but Smith has wrist control. Smith looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Webber is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Smith trying to control the position.
Webber decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Smith, up you get! Webber slips a jab and a cross from Smith.
Webber swats away the attempt to clinch by Smith. Webber dodges the punch combination from Smith.
Smith tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Webber counters with a leg kick.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smith gets caught napping as Webber dives in and scores a takedown. Smith manages to retain guard. This has been an exciting period of action! Webber keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Smith's head. Webber drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Webber jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Webber engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Smith is trying to keep Webber in close.
Webber with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Webber postures up and lands a big shot to Smith's brow. Webber stands and steps away. Smith gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. Webber darts in looking for a takedown but Smith gets double underhooks and turns Webber into the cage. Webber has Smith pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Webber pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Smith tumbling to the mat - Webber dives into Smith's guard. Webber cracks Smith with a solid left hand.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Webber is in close to Smith's body, working some short punches and elbows. Webber engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Webber throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Webber is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Webber stops Smith from standing up. Smith keeping moving, preventing Webber from controlling successfully. Webber has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Webber sitting in guard here, content to control.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Mark Webber. Some wild striking there from Webber.
Smith is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Webber swats away the attempt to clinch by Smith. Smith lands a big uppercut and Webber crumbles to the floor! The ref thinks about stopping the fight but Webber looks OK. Smith waves Webber back to his feet! The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Smith throws a quick head kick that knocks Webber silly! This fight is all over! What a finish! Smith is up on the cage, taking in the applause from the crowd.
