Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Phillip Gardner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carlos Ortega (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Phillip Gardner! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Carlos Ortega! The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Topper Green and Ben Watson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ortega lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
It looks like Phillip Gardner has been cut. Ortega shoots for a double leg takedown but Gardner sprawls well. He's pushed Ortega's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Ortega tries to bum rush Gardner with a series of wild strikes but Gardner uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Gardner tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Ortega defends well and Gardner ends up having to push Ortega into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Gardner has had enough of the clinch but Ortega keeps him there for the moment. Gardner avoiding damage as Ortega throws knees to the body.
Ortega escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Gardner moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross. Gardner rushes Ortega and presses him up against the cage. Ortega will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Gardner up against the cage. Ortega jumps guard and drags Gardner to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ortega is controlling Gardner's posture. Ortega manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Gardner is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. A nice elbow there by Ortega. Gardner knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ortega on the ground. Ortega landing strikes, looking to finish! Ortega controlling his opponent. Ortega working the ground and pound effectively.
Ortega has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Ortega is standing up, even though he is in mount. Ortega shoots in for a double leg but Gardner sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Gardner misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Ortega gets the takedown into side control. Ortega decides to stand up, so the ref orders Gardner to his feet. Ortega looking to score a takedown here. Gardner is defending well but Ortega drives through and ends up in Gardner's guard. Gardner looking for a sweep. Not yet Gardner, not yet. Ortega slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ortega wants to get up but he can't break Gardner's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Ortega thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Ortega controlling from the top position. Gardner wants to sweep but no luck. Ortega sitting in guard here, content to control.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Carlos Ortega was stalling too much, according to the referee. Gardner defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Ortega. Phillip Gardner has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Carlos Ortega.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ortega goes for a double leg but Gardner avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Gardner continues to drive forward. Ortega manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back. Ortega has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Carlos Ortega dominated that round. The cut man is working on Phillip Gardner's cut. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Ortega closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Ortega breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Ortega takes the fight into the clinch. Gardner is trying to drag Ortega to the mat but Ortega just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. Ortega has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Gardner clear over his head and slammed him to the mat! I would not like to be Gardner right now.
Ortega throwing damaging strikes from the back! Gardner could be in trouble here!
That's one minute gone in the round. Ortega just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.
Ortega lands shots from the back. Ortega working for the rear naked choke here. He's got one arm under but Gardner is defending well. A couple of punches soften him up though and Ortega has tightened the hold! This one could be all over! It is! Gardner taps out!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:36 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Carlos Ortega!
