PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ken Mckenzie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joel Thompson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Thompson comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Real American kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Ken Mckenzie is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples... Tweaking his own nipples that is.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ken Mckenzie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joel Thompson!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, John Roberts and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thompson throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Mckenzie's waist but Mckenzie gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Thompson off to one side.
Thompson dives in and grabs Mckenzie's left leg, looking for a takedown. Mckenzie pushes down on Thompson's head and hops out.

Thompson closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Thompson lands in his opponent's guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Thompson sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Thompson stops Mckenzie from standing up.
Thompson controlling from the top position.
Thompson advances to half guard.

Well, if Thompson is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Thompson's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
It looks like Thompson might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Joel Thompson.
Mckenzie fails in his attempt to clinch.

Thompson changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Mckenzie tries to avoid it but Thompson manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Mckenzie to the ground. Mckenzie escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Ken Mckenzie has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joel Thompson.

Thompson shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Thompson looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Joel Thompson hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Thompson throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Mckenzie was covering up waiting for the punch and Thompson finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Thompson advances to half guard.
Mckenzie pushes Thompson off looking to stand but Thompson dives back in and keeps control.
Thompson is controlling the pace.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Joel Thompson has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Thompson closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Mckenzie's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mckenzie takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Mckenzie stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Mckenzie wants it to stay on the feet.
Thompson throws a head kick that misses.
Thompson shoots for a double leg takedown but Mckenzie sprawls well. He's pushed Thompson's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Thompson tries to score a power double leg takedown but Mckenzie sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Thompson somewhat.
Ken Mckenzie has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joel Thompson.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Mckenzie accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Thompson is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Thompson seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Mckenzie drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Thompson manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Mckenzie has Thompson in his guard.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Joel Thompson wasn't active enough on the ground.
A punch combination from Mckenzie misses.
We've been informed that Thompson has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Ken Mckenzie is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Thompson misses with a head kick.
Thompson is looking to land body kicks.

Mckenzie swinging wildly here.
Thompson throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Thompson closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
The referee asks Thompson politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Thompson prefers to stall for the moment though.
Thompson advances nicely into full mount.

Thompson moves to the back position.
Thompson has good solid back control here.
You can see the frustration on Mckenzie's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Joel Thompson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Thompson shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Thompson was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Thompson connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Mckenzie some visible discomfort.

Thompson is riding his opponent, not letting Mckenzie buck him off.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Joel Thompson hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Thompson shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Mckenzie sprawls well. Mckenzie wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Thompson gets slowly back to his feet.

Mckenzie thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Thompson is positioning himself well to prevent Mckenzie advancing to mount.

Mckenzie seems to be looking for submissions.
Thompson desperately trying to maintain half guard.

Mckenzie is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Thompson still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Thompson has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!
Joel Thompson is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Thompson content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Mckenzie tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Thompson presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

Mckenzie has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.
Thompson controlling the position well here. Mckenzie rolled but Thompson kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.

Thompson sinks in the hooks and is looking for the choke. He's got it! Mckenzie taps out!

An out of breath Joel Thompson thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
