PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Thomas Hawk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tony Hernandez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hawk comes to the cage accompanied by Call to Arms. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Thomas Hawk!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tony Hernandez!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Stewart Dunkirk and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hernandez closes the distance and clinches.

Hawk has picked Hernandez up - he's going for a ride! Hawk dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.

Hernandez looking for submissions off his back.
Hernandez is trying to get back to full guard.
Hawk looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Hawk winds up and cracks Hernandez with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Hawk is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Hawk is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Hawk is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Hawk seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Hernandez for as long as he can get away with.

Hernandez is looking to improve his position.

Hawk is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Hawk perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Hernandez misses with some strikes from the bottom.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Hawk lands a nice short elbow.
Still in half guard, Hawk seems content to control.

Hernandez is pressing down on Hawk's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Hawk makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Hawk is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hernandez wants to stand up but Hawk is controlling him.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hawk is stalling in the full guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Hernandez wants to sweep but no luck.

Hawk drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Hawk jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Hawk controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Hawk might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Hawk's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Hawk pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Hernandez is keeping the position for now.
Hernandez looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Hernandez is trying to control the position from the bottom.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Hawk tries to close the distance and clinch but Hernandez swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Hernandez rushes Hawk and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Hawk manages to pull guard.

Hawk working for a triangle but Hernandez defends it easily.
Hawk is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Hawk could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Hernandez tries to free his leg and advance position but Hawk is retaining full guard.
Hawk wants to get back to his feet but Hernandez is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Hernandez throwing strikes but missing.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Hawk wants to sweep but no luck.
Hernandez wants to control from the top but Hawk keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Excellent takedown into side control there by Hernandez.
Hawk is trying to get back to half guard.
You can see the frustration on Hawk's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Hawk is looking for a sweep.

Hernandez stands up and beckons Hawk to his feet.

Hernandez shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Hernandez is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Hawk defends it well.
Hawk tries to roll over but Hernandez keeps him under control.

Hawk is refusing to be controlled, as Hernandez sits in half guard.
Hernandez is pressing down on Hawk's thigh, looking to free his foot. Hawk is holding on for now.

Hawk is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Hernandez tries to sprawl but Hawk drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Hawk drops an elbow to the side of Hernandez's head.

Hernandez is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Hawk pulls his head out easily.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Hernandez throws his legs up looking for a submission but Hawk uses it to pass to side control.
Hernandez is being controlled here.
Hernandez tries to bench press Hawk off him but Hawk keeps the position.
Hernandez is breathing heavily.

Hawk is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Hernandez is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Hernandez can't do much from the bottom here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Hawk slows the pace down.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Thomas Hawk will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Hernandez has hold of one of Hawk's legs. Hawk is fighting the takedown attempt but Hernandez gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Hernandez stands up from Hawk's guard - Hernandez perhaps looking for a knockout.

Hawk gets a clinch.

Hawk has Hernandez pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Hawk pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Hernandez tumbling to the mat - Hawk dives into Hernandez's guard.
Hernandez is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Hernandez is looking to stand up but Hawk isn't so interested in that idea.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Hawk is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Hawk's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Hawk postures up and lands a big shot to Hernandez's brow.

Hawk slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Hawk has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Hawk is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Hawk not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Hawk lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Hawk with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Hawk works over Hernandez with some ground and pound from guard.
Hawk slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Hernandez takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Hawk is in close to Hernandez's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

We're going to have a standup here because Thomas Hawk wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Hawk pulls Hernandez in close to his closed guard and prevents Hernandez from doing any damage or advancing position.
Tony Hernandez has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Thomas Hawk is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

And that's the end of the fight!
Thomas Hawk showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Hawk, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
