Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Frank Shamrock! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Butch Copeland! The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, Sandra Marshall and David Hoff.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Excellent takedown into side control there by Shamrock. Copeland tries to get back to half guard but can't. Shamrock thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Shamrock working the ground and pound but Copeland is defending the strikes. Copeland is looking to regain half guard here but Shamrock keeps moving and retains side control. Copeland is still trying to improve position. Shamrock is working Copeland over with some ground and pound from side control. Copeland tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Shamrock wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Shamrock trying to control the position but Copeland is working away. Copeland is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Shamrock off and has taken his back! This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Shamrock is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Copeland is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Shamrock knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Shamrock for a finish. Copeland throwing lazy shots from the back mount that aren't doing any damage. Shamrock is trying to break free.
Copeland somehow managing to miss with a strike from the back. Shamrock rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Copeland seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Shamrock does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Shamrock controlling the leg, holding on to half guard. Shamrock is trying to get back to full guard. Copeland frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Shamrock looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Shamrock looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back! Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Shamrock is trying to defend against the choke here but Copeland has an arm under his chin. This one might not last much longer. Copeland Tightens the hold and Shamrock taps out furiously! Copeland displays superior BJJ to win the fight.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:34 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Butch Copeland! After the fight, Butch Copeland was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
