PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jimmy Padilla (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ezekiel Rodas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ezekiel Rodas will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jimmy Padilla!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ezekiel Rodas!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Padilla avoids the head kick by Rodas.
Rodas tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Padilla counters by moving into the clinch.

Rodas gets a trip takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Padilla gets full guard.
Padilla is pulling down on Rodas's head. It's preventing any offense from Rodas, at least for the moment.
Padilla looking for a sweep. Not yet Padilla, not yet.
Padilla bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Rodas's guard.
Rodas pulls Padilla in close to his closed guard and prevents Padilla from doing any damage or advancing position.

Rodas has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Padilla can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Rodas is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Rodas throwing shots but Padilla is blocking nicely.
Padilla is trying to maintain the position but Rodas is very close to passing his half guard.
Rodas wants to lay and pray for a moment but Padilla keeps working.
Padilla really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Rodas prevents Padilla from improving his position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Padilla has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Rodas is working away from the top position though.

Rodas is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Padilla defends it well.

Rodas is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Padilla is looking to escape.
Padilla controlling the position for now.

Rodas stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Padilla to get to his feet.

Rodas throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Padilla was covering up waiting for the punch and Rodas finishes the takedown easily into guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Rodas trying to control the position from guard on top but Padilla is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Padilla seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Padilla looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Padilla looking for a guillotine here but Rodas defends easily.

Padilla has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Rodas can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Padilla is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Rodas stands and throws Padilla's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Rodas stands up and beckons Padilla to his feet.

Padilla gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Padilla will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Padilla is breathing heavily.

Padilla is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Padilla is thwarting Rodas's attempts to control the position.

The fight stays on the outside here - Rodas looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Rodas shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Padilla seems keen to control Rodas's posture.
Rodas really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Padilla. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Rodas wants to control from the top but Padilla keeps moving.

Padilla is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Rodas stands and steps away. Padilla gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Rodas looks to score with a jab to the body but Padilla is just out of range.

Rodas shoots in and gets a takedown into Padilla's guard.
Padilla keeping moving, preventing Rodas from controlling successfully.

Padilla is working an open guard so Rodas takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Rodas is breathing heavily.
Rodas lands a head shot.
Rodas lands a nice looking body kick.

Rodas tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Padilla manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Rodas changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Padilla looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Padilla sneaks back into half guard.
Padilla tries to roll over but Rodas keeps him under control.

Rodas decides to return to a standing position.
Rodas tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Rodas drives through with a takedown into Padilla's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Rodas won't allow Padilla to get back to his feet.

Rodas is fighting to break Padilla's control of his arms but Padilla is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Padilla has a closed guard, preventing Rodas from standing up.

Padilla is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Rodas is aware though and is defending well.
Padilla has his hands on Rodas's head, controlling the position.
Padilla looking to hit a scissor sweep but Rodas is one step ahead there.

Padilla is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Rodas defends well.
Padilla keeping moving, preventing Rodas from controlling successfully.

Rodas missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Rodas stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Padilla swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Rodas looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Ezekiel Rodas has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Ezekiel Rodas showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Padilla is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Rodas's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Rodas's back!
Padilla is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.
Rodas tries to break free.
Rodas takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Rodas just trying to survive but Padilla is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.

Padilla is cranking Rodas's head sideways - that looks painful. He's managed to get his other arm under the chin and this looks bad for Rodas! He's tightened the choke and Rodas is tapping out!
