Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Prince Merritt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Prince Merritt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Paul Smith!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Josh West and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith tries a head kick but it misses.
Paul Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Merritt gets caught napping as Smith dives in and scores a takedown. Merritt manages to retain guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Smith stops Merritt from standing up.
Smith is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but Merritt is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Smith is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Smith stops Merritt from standing up.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Paul Smith was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Merritt fails with an attempt to clinch.
Smith tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Merritt wants to clinch up but Smith keeps it at a distance.
Smith throws a left and a right that both miss
and Merritt counters with a head kick. That will keep Smith thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

Smith feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Smith wants to pass the guard but Merritt is keeping the position.

Merritt is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Smith stops Merritt from standing up.
Smith trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Merritt controls Smith momentarily but Smith frees himself.

Merritt looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Merritt working a defensive guard but Smith passes into half guard.
Merritt won't allow Smith to pass to mount.
Smith is trying to control. Merritt wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Smith wants to pass the guard but Merritt is defending well.

Smith is looking to take a break and control but Merritt is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smith stalling.

Paul Smith has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
A head kick misses from Smith.
Merritt is looking to clinch but Smith is avoiding it.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Merritt enables Smith to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Merritt manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but Merritt is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Smith jumps guard.
Smith controlling Merritt's posture.

Smith avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Smith working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Merritt doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Merritt manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Merritt throws a big right hand that misses.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Paul Smith dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Merritt tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Smith manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Smith throws a sloppy head kick and Merritt moves out of range easily.

Smith changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Merritt looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Merritt wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
The referee asks Smith politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Smith prefers to stall for the moment though.
Merritt prevents Smith from improving position.
Merritt tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Merritt wants to control but Smith postures up.
Smith in side control lands a decent elbow.
Merritt is not content to let Smith control the position.

Smith decides to stand back up.

Smith wants to clinch up but Merritt keeps it at a distance.
Merritt moves in looking to clinch but Smith pushes him off.

Smith throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Merritt tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Smith is in Merritt's guard.
Merritt not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Smith trying to control but Merritt is working from the bottom.
Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Merritt swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Smith sitting in guard here, content to control.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Smith works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Smith takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Smith is just content to waste time from the top position. Merritt takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Merritt looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Merritt is trying to control the position but Smith postures up.
Smith engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Smith shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Merritt manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Merritt seems keen to control Smith's posture.
Smith pushing down on Merritt's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.

Smith is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Merritt tries to kick Smith off but Smith keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Smith keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Smith passes to full mount!
Merritt's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.

Smith tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Smith has isolated one of Merritt's arms. Merritt looking to fight him off but Smith twists into an armbar. It's tight... Will he tap?? YES, he's tapped! This one is all over!
